A Florida panther was spotted in Georgia in 2025. Now they’re proposing to remove it from the protected species list entirely. That's not because it recovered. It's because it's barely even here anymore. Taking an animal off the list doesn't always mean it's safe. Sometimes it just means it's already gone. This is part of the biggest update to Georgia's protected species list in 20 years. 40 species are coming off, some because they truly recovered, others like the panther, because they've all but vanished. 145 more are being added because they're in real trouble: the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the Suwannee alligator snapping turtle, the whooping crane, several bat species being wiped out by white-nose syndrome, and the eastern spotted skunk. This list sat untouched for 20 years because no law required anyone to check it. Maybe if someone had looked sooner, the panther wouldn't just be a name coming off a list. Maybe it'd still be here.
