In the time it takes a train to get from New York to Washington, you can get from Paris to Provence - twice as far. I mapped every rail station you can reach from central Paris and central New York in 1, 2, and 3 hours. Two hours from Paris gets you to Lyon, Strasbourg, or Nantes. Two hours from Midtown gets you to Wilmington. Paris to London, under the Channel, is a slightly longer trip than New York to Washington. The train is 40 minutes faster. Washington only makes the 3-hour cutoff on one train a day. It isn't about distance. France has built dedicated high-speed lines out of Paris since 1981, and TGVs run them at 186 mph. The Northeast Corridor shares track with commuter trains and runs through century-old tunnels. Acela only hits top speed on short stretches. The Northeast has the cities and the riders for this. Every hop on the corridor, even Boston to New York, is shorter than Paris to Lyon. What it doesn't have is track built for speed.

Working on parking options for a Very Complex project. One parking option that I kind of love is a shared parking facility per block. This means people who WANT a parking spot can lease it in the garage. People who don't want to can opt out and spend their money elsewhere. A garage on the block is convenient ... you can get to it by going out your back door and crossing the courtyard to the garage. (this garage is for 200 spots -- doesn't need to be this big)

Spending decades studying is a feature, not a bug, to leaders who want to look like they're "doing something" without actually changing anything.

Much less studies. For example, Madrid metro didn’t do a full environmental study for their metro expansion because public transit is already a environmental good.

Autonomous vehicles are like congestion pricing: Before being rolled out, people are opposed to the idea in theory. But after experiencing how great it is in practice, they become really supportive.
SF voters on robotaxis: Sept 2023: 44% support, 51% oppose July 2025: 67% support, 29% oppose What changed? People rode them. Robotaxi opposition peaks before anyone has ridden. D.C., New York and Massachusetts are deciding at peak fear and minimum experience.

We destroyed our transit systems and intercity rail network and made it mandatory to buy a $50,000 machine just to be employable
BREAKING: America’s $1.7 trillion auto loan market is headed for a crash, per Reuters. Auto loans are now one of the biggest sources of household debt, bigger than credit cards. And the strain is showing: 1 in 5 Americans is behind on at least one loan, the highest since 2010, and the average car on the road is now nearly 13 years old, a record.

“Our outdated building codes don’t allow for single-stair housing which is smaller apartment complexes, condos, it’s a great entry point for home ownership. I worked with Republicans across the aisle. We repealed that outdated regulation.” @jamestalarico

Need regional rail along I-95 and plan for a circumferential light rail line. With those toll prices, a light rail line over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge should be able to be financed for the next express lane segment. google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?m…

💸 Beltway rush hour got expensive. WTOP Traffic saw tolls top $60 from the American Legion Bridge to Van Dorn Street, while the trip to near Fredericksburg hit $104 around 6 p.m! No big incidents just congestion according to the traffic team. @WTOP

Lots of people drive cars in the US but that doesn't mean they want to. Car fanatics want us to believe that car-dominance is because customers love cars. But choices reveal desires only when there are real options. usa.streetsblog.org/2026/10/…

I believe that Long Island might be the only place in the world in which 200 trains a day could serve a self storage place and parking lot.
crazy moment in the NY governor debate: Hochul says she wishes she pushed even harder on YIMBY policies, meanwhile, Blakeman literally *brags* about how his NIMBY policies have made housing so expensive

Very glad this project is nearly done but let’s take a moment to consider that the *APPROVAL* to move forward was given in 2008 and the need for replacement was widely accepted waaaaay before that. We cannot continue with business as usual with our infrastructure buildout.
It's the end of an era! History was made Friday night when the last ever train traveled over the Portal Bridge in New Jersey, officially ending decades of delays for Amtrak and @NJTRANSIT customers with the retirement of the 116-year-old bridge forever. And it’s fitting it was a NextGen Acela train, as it’s truly out with the old and in with the new.

These days, battery electrics & dual modes can just pan up at the end wire territory. And with VRE now owning the Manassas Line, they could power up the entire line for EMUs.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending
