The grandmother from Tennessee who was falsely arrested from faulty AI facial recognition and thrown in jail for 6 months has sued the department and the Fargo PD cop Lucas Heck.
After someone committed bank fraud in Fargo, police ran the security footage through an AI program that led them to Angela Lipps' social media. That's all it took to get an out-of-state arrest warrant.
The truth is: Lipps had never been to North Dakota in her life. Her defense attorney eventually provided receipts proving she was in Tennessee at the time of the bank fraud in ND. All charges were dropped, and she was released into the cold on Christmas Eve 2025.
The focus of this is the AI giving bad data.
But the real issue is incompetent cops like Lucas Heck who could have done the due diligence of simply verifying whether or not she was even in the state BEFORE ARRESTING HER.
What about Cass County attorney Kim Hegvik, the prosecutor behind the case against Lipps?
The citizens of Fargo will have to pay for the lawsuit, and Lucas Heck and Kim Hegvik will probably continue working. This is not true accountability.

James seemed anxious. We all were.
