World Food Day 2026: Today, Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Food Day, marking 46 years since the Food and Agriculture Organization (@FAO) of the United Nations started this global campaign. The #WorldFoodDay was created to remind everyone about the importance of #food with the main goal, "to solve global hunger, stop malnutrition, and make sure every person has enough healthy food to eat." This year’s official theme is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” The theme means that the choices and technologies we use right now will shape the future of our food. In Uganda, the main #WorldFoodDay events will be hosted by the Mbarara Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (@mbazardi) , the home of Uganda’s Dairy centre of excellence that is also celebrating 100 years of impactful research. #WorldFoodDayUG #WorldFoodDay2026 #MbaZARDIat100 @FrankTumwebazek @DESIREtheFARMER

Fisheries sub-sector: Government to profile fish farmers. Hon. Robert Migadde Ndugwa the Minister of State for Fisheries informed the general public, through the media, of a nationwide exercise to profile fish farmers. Hon. Migadde explained that the initiative aims to assess active ponds, identify industry challenges, and determine necessary government support due to declining lake fish stocks. Farmers currently face major hurdles, including high fish feed costs, severe droughts drying up ponds, and expensive equipment hire. Government plans to intervene by supplying quality fingerlings, creating local feed manufacturing facilities, and providing affordable pond excavators. These interventions form part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting Uganda’s annual farmed fish production from under 750,000 metric tonnes to over two million metric tonnes. Environmentalists have urged the government to strengthen climate action and environmental management measures amid prolonged drought that has affected crops and livestock in some parts of the country. Edrine Muhumuza, founder of Youth Go Green Africa, called for sustainable solutions to deforestation and soil erosion, noting that some schools lack access to clean water. Environmental advocate Paul Mwirigi Muriungi urged the government to make renewable energy affordable and accessible to rural communities amid plans to ban charcoal. They made the remarks on Wednesday during the 3rd CEOs meeting and high-level dialogue on accelerating Uganda’s green economy transition in Kampala. #MonitorUpdates 📹: @PrinceWdavid
