🔫✨ Think your iron is cool? Think again. This isn't just ANY revolver—this is BUFFALO BILL CODY level legendary. Meet the @Smith_WessonInc New Model 3 that drips with more swagger than your entire gun collection. Those engravings? Pure eye candy. But here's where it gets WILD: "Wm Sweeney from W. F. C." etched on the backstrap like a love letter written in steel. In 1886, Buffalo Bill himself gifted this beauty to William Sweeney, his cornet-slinging bandleader who brought the soundtrack to the most iconic Wild West shows ever staged. For several decades, this horn player rode shotgun with Cody's empire, making music while legends were born. That weathered patina? Those worn grips? That faded factory blue peeking through? This gun has STORIES, darling. Sweeney didn't baby this piece—he LIVED with it, carried it, used it like the frontier demanded. When Sweeney died in 1917 (tragic gallbladder surgery—even cowboys couldn't dodge everything), he left behind more than music. He left behind proof that some gifts transcend mere metal and become mythology. This isn't just a revolver. It's pure American thunder. 🌪️💀 #BuffaloBill #WildWest #CowboyLife #FrontierLife #AmericanLegend #WildWestShow #1800s #VintageAmerica #CowboyBand #HistoricFirearms #SmithWesson #SmithAndWesson #SmithAndWessonPartner #Model3 #VintageRevolver #AntiqueFirearms #GunHistory #CollectorPiece #HistoricGuns #ClassicIron #GunPorn #FirearmsHistory #LegendaryIron #BadassHistory #AmericaThunder #FrontierSwagger #CowboySwag #WildWestVibes #IconicSteel #HistoryHitsHard #AmericanBadass #LegendStatus #HistoryTok #VintageVibes #Legendary #IconicMoment #AmericanHeritage #MuseumPiece #StoriesInSteel #PieceOfHistory #CultureShock #TimelessCool

Some guns tell a story. This one ran the whole show. This @Smith_WessonInc .32 Safety Hammerless — the "New Departure" — shipped from the factory on September 6, 1901, to Howell Gano & Co. of Cincinnati. Engraved on the sideplate: F. B. HUTCHINSON. Fred Bailey Hutchinson was the nephew of James A. Bailey (of Barnum & Bailey fame) and served as general manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West from 1902 to 1907, running the show's legendary European tours. The provenance is what makes this piece extra-extraordinary. It descended not through Hutchinson's family, but through Buffalo Bill's — from Cody's sister Julia Cody Goodman, to her daughter, to Stella Foote's famed Treasures of the West Collection. Which raises a tantalizing question: did Hutchinson gift his revolver to the great showman himself? #SmithWesson #SmithAndWesson #BuffaloBill #WildWest #AntiqueFirearms #FirearmsHistory #GunCollecting #CircusHistory #Provenance #SmithAndWessonPartner

Your gun is cool, but is it Volcanic cool? Before @Smith_WessonInc was Smith & Wesson, there was an earlier trifecta built around a repeating magazine pistol that fired the spectacularly inept "Rocket Ball"—a hollow-base lead bullet with a small powder charge and a cork stopper holding the primer. When it fired (which wasn't often), you could almost watch the bullet tumble out of the muzzle. The lineage: the original Smith & Wesson partnership (1854) → Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. (1855) → New Haven Arms Co. (1857) → @WinRepArms (1866). In 1856, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson walked away from Volcanic to start a little side hustle that became the modern Smith & Wesson. They were shrewd enough to see that Rocket Ball was a dead end and that Louis-Nicolas Flobert's metallic cartridge was the future. Colt's revolver patent had just expired, so Smith and Wesson said "hold my beer." The twist: it was a metallic cartridge that Benjamin Tyler Henry eventually coaxed into a working lever-action magazine rifle—the gun the Volcanic should have been all along. This particular Volcanic pistol is an early one from 1855, back when Horace, Daniel, and Benjamin were all still trying to make the damn thing work. #GunHistory #SmithWesson #SmithAndWesson #SmithandWessonPartner #Volcanic #AntiqueFirearms #FirearmsHistory #WinchesterArms

I don't often do this ... but if you're inclined, check out youtube.com/@LegacyoftheGun and give his channel a subscribe. Eric is doing some great arms history media production, and he's also a super guy to boot. And his display at the NRAAM this year was top-notch. #gunmedia #showsomelove

There's rare. And then there's this. Exhibition shooters like Annie Oakley sometimes used smooth bore revolvers loaded with shot — purpose-built for shattering glass targets mid-air in front of a live crowd. This @Smith_WessonInc .44 Double Action left the factory in 1887 — smack in the middle of Annie's peak years with Buffalo Bill's Wild West. I haven't conclusively tied this particular revolver to her, but it's consistent with other documented guns she ordered during this era. And it's one of only a handful of revolvers we can document as leaving Springfield with a smooth bore. Now pair it with this: an actual blown glass target ball — the kind Annie would toss into the air and obliterate. For obvious reasons, very few survived well over a century of shot, gravity, and neglect. This one did. Sometimes the gun and the story find each other. #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #AnnieOakley #BuffaloBill #WildWest #AntiqueFirearms #GunCollector #ExhibitionShooting #AmericanHistory #44DoubleAction #GunHistory #VintageFirearms #RevolversOfTwitter

The most boring part of this engraved @Smith_WessonInc Model 1 Second Issue is that it shipped from the factory on September 11, 1866, to Joseph W. Storrs in New York City. Storrs operated at 258 Broadway — right in the heart of Manhattan's commercial corridor — and dealt in both firearms and fancy goods, exactly the kind of retailer who'd commission a presentation-grade piece like this. The engraving speaks for itself: a hunter on the side plate taking aim at a bird, lush scrollwork flowing across the barrel, and diagonal flourishes on the cylinder that exude mastery. Mother-of-pearl grips finish the package. The style and execution point strongly toward Louis Daniel Nimschke, the Prussian-born master engraver who dominated New York's firearms engraving trade in the postwar years. Very few hands working in the 1860s could cut this cleanly on a gun this small. Shown here in its original "stand of flags" thermoplastic case with a full block of rimfire cartridges — the kind of kit that makes a collector's heart skip a beat. #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #rimfire #engraved #rimfire #antiquerevolver #antiquefirearms #firearmscollecting #gunhistory #americanhistory #19thcentury #gildedage #postcivilwar #wheelgunwednesday

What does this rifle have to do with @Smith_WessonInc? Everything, it turns out. Daniel Wesson's older brother, Edwin was a world-renowned gunsmith that made some of the finest target rifles in the world. Edwin only managed to make about 600 rifles before dying at the young age of 37, but his legacy lived on. Daniel apprenticed under Edwin for five years and, after his brother's death, reigned supreme as the Wesson family's most famous gunsmith. This rifle weighs in at a hefty 14 pounds, and it's in need of some conservation work. But even through the dust and cobwebs, it still bears the unmistakable signature of Edwin Wesson's perfectionism—from the patented removable muzzle to the crisp double trigger. #rifle #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #muzzleloader #perfection

Oh, hi there! It's been a minute. I needed to take a bit of a break from socials for a bit. Stresses that don't need to be aired out on social media sapped a lot of my time and energy for the past two months, and sometimes a person just needs to take care of themself. I was very touched by those of you that reached out to check on me. It's no secret that I'm a big fan of the 1911 platform. This Alchemy Quantico HighCap Carry (with a @Trijicon SRO perched on top) has been a lot of fun to put through its paces, and I figured a bit of a pocket dump was in order. More fun stuff to come! #alchemy1911 #9mm #carry #pewpew #rangetime

For Thanksgiving, I put a few hundred rounds through this @Smith_WessonInc 22X. Anyone that hasn't tried a .22 rimfire pistol with a red dot and a suppressor is in for a delightful surprise, because the 22X makes a superb host for both. As I often joke to new shooters, this combo is the gateway drug to a great day at the range. Out of the box, the 22X comes with the thread adapter for the barrel that allows any 1/2-28 threaded can to be attached. The slide is cut for the usual bevy of glass. And the standard capacity magazines hold an impressive 20 rounds of the little dirties we know and love. I was running an @Aklysdefense Kopis can on this, and things were so quiet that I could hear the clickity-clack of the action cycling and the "whizz" of the flying lead. Like most autoloading pistols, this one favored higher velocity .22 rounds, but I ran plenty of standard velocity Eley through it with only one or two rounds that didn't quite cycle the slide enough. What's your rimfire game this weekend? #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #22lr #pewpew #rangeday

Let's say it's 1916 and you're in the market for a new pistol. @coltlkl had five choices for you: the full-sized ubiquitous M1911 in .45 ACP, the M1902 Military Model in .38 ACP, the well-known M1903 Pocket Hammerless in .32 ACP, and the tiny M1908 Vest Pocket in .25 ACP. And smack in the middle of this was the M1903 Pocket Hammer pistol shown here, which was chambered in the now-obsolete .38 ACP round. This pistol didn't achieve nearly the popularity that the Hammerless and the M1911 did, and by the time this one sold Colt was effectively using up their old parts supply. Still, it's an interesting peek into Colt's evolution of the semiautomatic pistol. And for those keeping score, the .38 ACP evolved into the modern .38 Super round. #colt #38acp #pistol #semiauto #pewpew #rangetime

For many decades, Rex Firearms was one of a small group of New York City gun dealers that armed local law enforcement agencies and its citizenry. Rex was particularly well known for stocking high-end firearms, and I've lettered more than a few engraved @Smith_WessonInc revolvers that were ordered through Rex. Even this Model 36, which shipped to Rex in May 1969 (at a dealer cost of $52.02!), is finished in nickel. #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #38special #pewpew #snubnoir

Unsolicited shout out to @sgammo_official. That was the best packaged ammunition order I've ever received. Not a large order by any stretch, but I still appreciate the time and care that went into making sure the pew pews arrived safely. #sgammo #38longcolt #rangeday #pewpew

Let's talk about this beautiful disaster from 1877. The @coltlkl "Lightning" was their first attempt at double action, and holy hell did they overcomplicate it. This .38 caliber nightmare had the reliability of a politician's promise - fragile internals that would break if you looked at them wrong. The real kicker? Some genius decided to skip the extractor rod. So while every other revolver on the frontier had a simple way to dump spent brass, Lightning owners were sitting there digging out casings with their fingernails like savages. One. At. A. Time. But here's the thing - Doc Holliday packed one of these temperamental bastards as his backup. Say what you want about its engineering, but when the most notorious dentist in Tombstone trusts it with his life, that means something. This particular piece rolled out in 1882 to Benjamin Kittredge in Cincinnati - one of the arms dealers who weaponized the Wild West. Whatever blood this iron spilled, whatever fortunes it made or lost, those stories died with its owners. Love it or hate it, the Lightning was Colt's messy first step toward modern revolvers. Sometimes progress looks pretty damn ugly. #colt #lightning #38longcolt #revolver #revolvers #antiquegun #antiqueguns #wildwest

OK shooting friends, my trusty pair of MSA Sordin earmuffs died after 15 years of ruthless and thankless service (translation: they owe me nothing!). I always kept a pair of backup hearing protection in my bag (an inexpensive pair of Walker's), but they too have decided to go to hearing protection heaven. I see that shooting earmuffs have come a long way since I last went shopping in the early 2010s, and I'm wondering what recommendations y'all have. The Safariland Liberator HP 2.0 have USB-C charging, which is a big upgrade over fiddling with AAA batteries. Peltor also makes some nice stuff, but it's spendy. Etcetera. Or, is all of this just silliness and I should just keep a few 30-06 shell casings in my shooting bag that I can stuff into my ear canals? #hearingprotection #rangeday #pewpew #deafness

After visiting a friend and fellow collector at his antique gun shop near Versailles, France, I decided that I wanted to put a Manurhin MR73 through its paces. What a curious revolver! I spend a lot of my time shooting Smith & Wesson revolvers, and that made everything about the MR73 feel simultaneously familiar and foreign. The MR73 is roughly L frame-sized. Chambered for six rounds of .357 Magnum and fitted with a 4-inch barrel, this revolver features an adjustable target sight and thick rubber grips. The frame feels Ruger-esque in its thick proportions, and I've no doubt that this gun can run hard. The great? This revolver runs like it's on ball bearings. The action is silky smooth, the cylinder swivels out on intention alone, and the extractor had zero friction. The not-so-great? I don't love serrated triggers to begin with, and the I found the edges of this trigger just sharp enough to make a day at the range a bit unpleasant. Apparently I'm not the only one that feels this way; a quick "MR73 trigger" Google search turned up the same criticisms. It's a neat revolver and I'm going to give it more range time to see how my affections for it mature. #manurhin #38special #frenchguns #revolver #revolvers #rangeday #pewpew

I'm not a big 10mm guy, but that's not for lack of interest. Some years ago I picked up a @GLOCKInc 40 and have found it to be entirely capable, and in a moment of weakness a few years ago I succumbed to a @NighthawkCustom Shadow Hawk Long Slide in 10mm that is the embodiment of all good things. When the @Smith_WessonInc 10mm Mountain Gun arrived, I wasn't quite sure what to think of it. I mean, an N frame revolver is never something to turn one's nose up at, and I'm digging the smooth walnut grips that S&W has resurrected (for those in the know, they're Victory-esque). But at the range? Holy hell, I shot the rings out of this gun yesterday, ran out of ammunition, and seriously considered trying to find an open gun store on a Sunday in the middle of Cajun country for more freedom seeds. I was shooting the Mountain Gun alongside the Manurhin MR73, which is a fast company to keep ... and the Smith kept up just fine. In fact, I was surprised to find that I was cutting slightly tighter groups with the tenner than I was with .38 Special in the MR73. This will unquestionably be my new rig for our annual Utah expedition. Now I just need to source a decent chest rig for it ... #smithwesson #smithandwesson #smithandwessonpartner #10mm #10mmauto #rangeday #rangetime #pewpew #revolver #revolvers

Damned gun influencers. Back in 2014, I wandered into a gun store in Gretna, Louisiana and bought a Colt M1903 Pocket Hammerless. It had a very slight barrel bulge, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. "I'm glad I sold that gun," said no-one ever, but I did foolishly part with it in 2018. Zoom ahead to this past weekend. With Eli Duckworth's recent M1903 post on my mind, I wandered into the same gun shop. And there was another M1903. Hence, #BadLifeDecisions. The incredible coinkidink? The two M1903s were only 17 serial numbers apart. I had forgotten what sweet little pistols these are to shoot. #Colt #M1903 #32ACP #rangetime #rangeday #pewpew
