You have to block out the noise. You have to invest in yourself. You have to do your research. You cannot believe any hype. Verify. Focus on yourself and creating an undeniable piece of material. The only way to make it is to get your script read by as many people as possible.

Everyone, including us, talks about rules for writing. Most importantly, instead of letting, “Am I doing this correctly?” guide you, Ask yourself, “What am I actually trying to say?”

I've seen a trend lately where scripts that I KNOW are not great or nearly good enough are making it to the QFs, SFs, even Finals of some contests. Not the really big ones, but others. And this is giving writers false hope or the notion that their scripts are ready to compete in bigger more expensive contests or are ready to be submitted to producers/reps, and theyre not. It feels like the bar is being lowered from where it was 5 yrs ago just so these smaller contests make money and keep writers coming back. And it's not good for writers.

Genuine connection, genuine interaction and genuine interest in you is incredibly valuable in this industry. Building that is the most important thing you can do if you want to be a filmmaker or screenwriter.
How do you actually fund a movie? Everyone tells you to go and make your movie but how? How to get to the next Obsession or the very least produce your script and find distribution? Years ago we started providing script notes for my friend @hudsonphillips & @MirrorBoxFilms, who has been doing this for years & his films look like and feel they're made for millions. Luckily he's letting you in on some of his methods. Take them very seriously. This guy is on this 4th feature and knows what he's doing. finishlinescriptcomp.com/blo…

Writing craft is teachable and we endeavor to teach structure, tone, dialogue, etc when we give notes to a writer. However, the one thing we cannot fully teach is voice. This is personal, it's comes from you directly, it's cultivated over time, having read screenplays and watched movies/TV. It's also the element that will attract us most to your material.

I was speaking to a writer yesterday, who asked how to help create tone in their thriller. Some ideas I shared: - Show The Bomb Early - Surprise lasts a second. Tension lasts as long as the reader knows something the character does not. - Start A Clock - A deadline turns ordinary action into pressure, without a single word of explanation. - Stretch The Worst Second - To make a second unbearable, make it long. Stretch the worst moment using the white on the page and let the reader feel every inch of it. - Keep The Threat Offscreen - What you don't show, the reader builds in their own head and they build something far worse than any description.

Everything takes so much longer than you think it will. Be gentle on yourself as you work on your rewrites and know that everyone has a time frame that's different than yours.
