Good news from Iran – Hannah Gholami has been released from prison! The 36-year-old convert begun a two-year sentence for involvement in a house church in November 2025. Earlier this year, she spent four months outside of prison for medical reasons. In August, she was told the remainder of her sentence could be served outside of jail, by reporting daily to work at a government-run factory. However, earlier this month, Hannah was pardoned as part of a general amnesty of prisoners and released from her sentence. Praise God for Hannah’s release and protection, and please pray for her complete healing and restoration. Source: Article 18

Ukraine and 4 year battle to release Abramovich funds from sale of Chelsea FC for humanitarian purposes: @FCDOGovUK Minister @StewartWood tells @UKHouseofLords that “Abramovich must not be allowed to delay these proceeds reaching the Ukrainian people.” In reply to my question he says they are “urgently exploring further action…including preparing for a possible legal case.” The urgency of the humanitarian crisis inflicted by Putin’s illegal war and his continuing campaign of attrition cannot be exaggerated and requires “action this day.” @ZelenskyyUa @andyburnham @KemiBadenoch @SecRubio @CharlesHMoore

This is the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, dated to the late 200s AD. It is the earliest known Christian hymn manuscript with both lyrics and musical notation. A plain English rendering of the surviving words: “Let all creation be silent. Let the shining stars be still. Let the rushing winds and rivers cease. While we sing to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, let every power answer: Amen, amen. Strength, praise, and glory forever to God, the only giver of all good things. Amen, amen.”

Oh dear. Once again a scientist, @PeterHotez , bungles the history of the sciences with the hoary “dark ages” myth, leaping straight from “Arab science” (thus mischaracterising the medieval sciences *in Arabic* done mainly by Persians and Moors) to Copernicus. Thus vaulting …
My comments on the triumph of Arab science and their contribution to preserving Aristotle, Ptolemy, Euclid, Pythagoras, Archimedes, during the dark ages, until it transitioned 500 years later to Copernicus, Galileo, Tycho Brah, Kepler, Vesalius, da Vinci, Gilbert. Without the great centers of Arab science in Baghdad, Cordoba, Cairo, all would have been lost. There would be no SpaceX, Anthropic, Meta, or at least not for another 500 years. You can take that to the bank straitstimes.com/world/unite…

Good thread. Why oh why is it not obvious to intelligent people that surviving Greek texts such as Aristotle were largely preserved in Greek by Greek-speaking scribes, not by Arabic writers?

1) Nonsense. EU rules would have to be changed just for the UK - a bad precedent. The ECB needs the UK in the Euro. The EU only has 10 net contributors out of 27 countries, and when/if France defaults on its debt, the ECB will reluctantly want to monetise some of that debt.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA What did I say! There is no associate membership, there never was. Was just Ursula trying to get a soundbite, immediately walked back by the actual membership.
🚨 BREAKING: EU countries have dropped the idea of offering Canada "associate member" status in the 27-member bloc, opting instead for softer language promising "ever closer association," according to a draft statement, seen by POLITICO. Full story: vist.ly/5qd4s

Meanwhile, inflation is turning savings into a long-term loss. Savings interest is supposed to protect savings from inflation attrition. Tax it hard and savings becomes a bad bet.

The latest issue of Vetus Testamentum features a statement from the editors: "We reject with prejudice the usage of GenAI for brainstorming, structuring, and composing studies of the biblical text and its historical and social contexts."

🚨 SUMMARY: The OBR forecasts following John Healey's Budget - Welfare spending will rise to £431.3bn by 2030/31 - an increase of £97.5bn a year in cash terms - This includes £209.8bn on pensioner benefits, £110.7bn on Universal Credit, £69.6bn on disability benefits, £13.9bn on Child Benefit and £27.2bn on other welfare - Inflation will peak at 3.75% in early 2027, up from the earlier prediction of 2% - UK GDP growth will slow from around 1.25% in 2026 to 1% in 2027, before climbing to 1.6% in 2031 - Average UK unemployment will rise to 5.1% across 2026 and 2027 - The Employment Rights Act will "likely" have a negative economic impact because of reduced flexibility and greater uncertainty for businesses - The landlord tax increases (property income) could contribute to a long-term rise in private rents and discourage landlords from entering the market - Real household disposable income per person will be around 0.75% lower in 2030-31 than it expected in March 2026 - Higher earnings and frozen tax thresholds will increase income tax and National Insurance receipts by £9bn in 2026-27 and around £8bn on average in subsequent forecast years compared with March - Net migration is forecast to fall to 120,000 in the year to mid-2026, then gradually rise to 230,000 by the year to mid-2031 - Nominal weekly earnings growth will slow to around 3.5% in 2026, then average roughly 2.25% a year - Andy Burnham's first-time buyer scheme could raise house prices by increasing demand without enough new homes being built

The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors. For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030. Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed. The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change. The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

In 2021, the Uni of Nottingham spent £37.5 million buying a new campus, in central Nottingham. They then spent £40 million developing it. It is expected to be sold for £14 million. Shearer West, former Vice Chancellor moved on to Leeds in 2024. She was paid £300k+.
Nottingham was 6th for modern languages in the 2021 REF and is the only university in East Midlands providing language courses. The closure of an objectively brilliant department by a Russell Group university raises questions about the 2015 decision to uncap student numbers and leave UK HE provision entirely to market forces timeshighereducation.com/new…
