Thank you for tuning into our discussion about Decolonising Coffee History! If you'd like to watch a re-run, head to my IG TV section. We had a lot of technical problems (this 3 person IG Live feature is still in beta....), so the event has been split into three videos.

BUT, I have exciting news: I plan to create a bonus episode from this discussion (and an earlier "practice" discussion), which will be the highlights of these conversations. It will drop on the A History of Coffee channel sometime in the next few months. Stay tuned!

Each sip of coffee we drink is steeped in dark colonial past. The reason we can enjoy it all every morning is because it's relatively cheap, and many people suffered under European colonizers to create systems that produced this cheap coffee.

In this Instagram Live session, a leading historian from the decolonising academic movement @hehistedu joins @coffeehistoryJM and I as we explore how colonialism shaped coffee, and what a cup of coffee free from the shackles of colonialism would look and taste like.

£1 for a latte is cheap. £3 is standard. £8 is definitely pricy, but is it a rip off? When is really expensive coffee actually worth our hard-earned squids?

Imagine staring out your window and seeing nothing but coffee trees. Then, you get in your car and drive for an hour, and again, all you see are coffee trees. 100 odd years ago, the Brazilian Francesco Schmidt owned enough coffee trees to fill the entire country of Malta.

In the 3rd episode of A History of Coffee, @coffeehistoryJM and I explore how Brazil became the biggest coffee producer in the world and who drank these lakes of coffee. But there is a darker side to this story. You can listen to the third episode here: open.spotify.com/episode/5zV…
