Merit is what people talk about. Every other advantage is what they quietly use. In The Big Bang Theory (Season 6), a group of scientists compete for a tenure position. One candidate brings his girlfriend to a memorial service, hoping her flirtation will help him win favor with the people making the decision. Sheldon sees the strategy and bluntly tells his own girlfriend to do the same. It’s played for laughs, but the uncomfortable truth is that Sheldon isn’t inventing a dirty game. He’s saying out loud what everyone else would rather leave unspoken. I’ve always found that contradiction interesting. In workplaces, universities, and business, people talk about qualifications and hard work, but outcomes can also depend on who knows you, who likes you, how you present yourself, and whether you make the right people feel important. Those advantages don’t always beat competence, but pretending they never matter doesn’t make the competition fairer. The person who points out the unwritten rules can end up looking worse than the people quietly benefiting from them. That’s how a system protects its public image without necessarily changing how it works. Sometimes the real advantage isn’t knowing how to play the game. It’s knowing which parts of the game everyone has agreed not to talk about.
