Democrats oppose funding changes for ThaiHealth and Thai PBS
The Democrat Party opposes Bhumjaithai’s proposed funding changes for ThaiHealth and Thai PBS, saying both organizations must remain independent and receive revenue directly from alcohol and tobacco taxes.
Requiring them to seek annual budget allocations would give the government influence over their work, party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on October 21. Management problems could be addressed without changing their funding arrangements. The party is still reviewing proposals affecting two other funds.
Labor and welfare advocacy groups petitioned the party at Parliament to oppose all four bills and press for their withdrawal. Abhisit pledged to work with civil society to preserve the funding principles of ThaiHealth and Thai PBS.

Thailand’s large and medium-sized reservoirs are 82% full, according to the Office of the National Water Resources’ October 19 report, ahead of heavy rain forecast for October 21–24.
Nong Pla Lai Reservoir held 113% of its stated storage capacity on October 18, while western Thailand recorded the highest regional storage level at 97%.
The Office of the National Water Resources has called for careful reservoir releases to protect downstream communities and advised residents in flood-prone areas to monitor official warnings.

Countries have less room to respond to new economic shocks despite better-than-expected global resilience, according to a Bank of Thailand source summarising the October 17, 2026 meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC).
The Bank of Thailand account identifies three major risks involving geopolitics and trade, public debt and financial markets, and uncertainty over artificial intelligence.
IMFC members also backed the Bangkok Blueprint, developed by Thailand’s central bank with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group, to strengthen digital financial security and combat cross-border fraud.
