The most interesting crops, you plant once and they keep growing and producing for years. Walking and multiplier onions, berries, culinary and medicinal herbs. There’s something satisfying about a patch that gives you food AND more plants. What’s the best thing you’ve planted that keeps coming back?

A while back, Dad and I built this asparagus bed (25 ft long)out of stone we gathered from a creek. Zoom in and you’ll see the red berries! Open pollinated! Those are full of seeds, and we dibble them right back into the ground. Has anybody ever tried developing their own asparagus landrace? We started with 2 year roots from a few different varieties. I’d love to see what comes from letting different varieties cross-pollinate and selecting the strongest plants for our conditions over the years. Anybody else patient enough to grow asparagus from seed and see what comes of it?

The garlic field is ready, and tomorrow we start getting next year’s crop in the ground! There’s something special about seeing all these freshly worked beds and knowing what they’ll be producing come next summer. We’ve put a lot of work into this ground, and I sure do enjoy seeing it all come together. 🌱🧄

Now this is impressive. If he grew that grain himself, that’s a whole different level of self-sufficiency. Growing your own food is one thing, but taking it all the way from the field to a loaf of bread? That’s something to be proud of. What a flex!
There Will Be Bread. Starring red winter wheat and oats. Special appearance by salt, water and yeast.

The Thanksgiving-only family is an economic and spiritual surrender. You cross paths twice a year to eat dry turkey, argue about cable news, and pretend you have a shared life because you once all lived under the same roof. Then you scatter back to your separate, leveraged subdivisions to fight inflation, taxes, and godless corporations completely alone. How can this be called anything other than alumni association with shared DNA? It certainly can't be called a household and united family. God built the clan to operate as a permanent phalanx against the forces of this world, not a biannual reunion. Consolidate your lines. Come back together. Build up your clan and tribe in order to face and triumph over the forces seeking to destroy every family caught alone in the dark.

You saved six percent on your framing crew by hiring imported, off-the-books labor instead of the local young men in your county. Congratulations on your gross margin. In exchange, you ensured that the twenty-two-year-old boys sitting in the pews behind you can’t earn an honest wage, can’t afford to buy a modest starter home, and can’t afford to marry. You literally sold out the next generation of American families so you could pocket a marginally larger distribution. Hire the sons of your own soil. Pay them a living wage.

Hyper-individualism tricked Christian men into believing that leaving their parents meant moving three states away and never speaking about money. For thousands of years, a man typically left his father and mother to establish a new tent within the camp, not to vanish into the wilderness. The clan pooled tools, shared pasture, defended the perimeter, and financed the next generation internally. Now you each own your own lawnmower, pay your own commercial interest rates, and wonder why you’re exhausted. Sell the isolated outposts. Reassemble the tribe. Come back together as a united family.

We spent the day at the October Sky Festival in Oliver Springs, Tennessee, selling some of our homegrown garlic! We brought along several varieties of garlic, plenty of hand-tied bundles, and a few other goodies from the farm. It was a good day getting to meet folks, talk gardening, and share a little of what we’ve been growing here at Fike Farm and Forest. There’s a whole lot of work that goes into growing, harvesting, curing, and preparing all this garlic. It’s mighty rewarding to finally see it all on display!

Only 50 generations separate us from the Anglo-Saxon invasions. Just 25 separate us from the Norman conquest. Only 150 generations from the Beaker folk invasion 4500 years ago. 150 of your direct ancestors linking you back to the stone age could all fit in a village pub. Not as remote as you may at first assume.

The world can turn upside down in a hurry. Supply chains break, prices climb, storms come through, and store shelves can get picked clean before you know it. Being prepared means more than having a few things put back. It means knowing how to grow your own food, save seed, take care of the soil, and put up what you harvest for later. That’s part of the goal behind Fike Farm and Forest: providing select crops for survival gardens so folks can be a little less dependent on the grocery store and a little more secure at home. This isn’t an ad. It’s a wake-up call. A stockpile won’t last forever. Knowing how to grow your own food can. Garlic, walking onions, potato onions, shallots, sunchokes, berries, perennial vegetables, herbs, carefully selected pumpkin varieties, and other dependable heirlooms that can keep producing year after year.
