Official figures out this morning report that last month, the UK government borrowed £24.5 billion.
But the fineprint shows that almost £11 billion of that extra borrowing went on debt interest payments.
That's more than £400 per household on debt service costs, in September alone.
So far during this financial year, from April to September, the government's debt interest payments amount to £61 billion.
Now, this number will barely feature in UK newspapers and across our airwaves. It may be mentioned in passing in out-of-the-way business sections, or on the odd business bulletin.
But this huge debt interest bill won't register with the vast majority of our political and media class, or impact the national debate.
Let me explain why that's so wrong and so dangerous ...
£61 billion is a massive amount of money.
It's equivalent to the UK's entire annual defence budget – the money we're paying, increasingly to foreign creditors, simply to service our national debt for six months, not to pay any of it back.
£61 billion is equivalent to the money you'd raise over a year from adding a whopping 7 pence to the basic rate of income tax.
For £61 billion, you could build around 40 large, state-of-the-art hospitals, or employ more than 100 thousand extra nurses for ten years.
£61 billion would pay for free-at-the-point of use social care for everyone who needs it in the UK, for an entire year – three times over.
Again, this is the debt interest bill on Britain's spiralling national debt – now more than 3 trillion pounds – over the last six months alone.
The UK's public finances are close to meltdown – yet so many MPs and journalists continue blithely to view ever more public spending and borrowing as the answer to every problem.
Those who highlight the dangers post by our hugely precarious national accounts are dismissed as cranks, ideologues or worse.
But basic arithmetic has no ideology.
And there is nothing "progressive" or "kind" or "right-on" about driving the UK ever closer to the fiscal cliff edge, provoking a crisis that will make the "austerity" years of the 2010s feel like a picnic, a crisis in which poorer households will suffer the most.
Yes, Britain's national debt is lower than that of France. But because our borrowing has been rising so sharply, and because we're so prone to inflation, our debt service costs are much higher.
The UK is spending a disgraceful 3.6pc of GDP on public debt interest, while France spends less than 2.5pc.
Endless airtime and column inches are devoted to spurious conversations about a billion or two of additional "fiscal headroom" we may or may not have in three years' time.
And, of course, any "extra headroom" is immediately pledged in new spending – which means yet more borrowing.
These conversations are a waste of time – and, in fact, are deeply counterproductive. Three-year fiscal forecasts, even one- and two-year forecasts, routinely turn out to be askew by tens of billions of pounds.
I'm not saying we don't need fiscal rules - we do, but we need more immediate rules, which actually bite, acting as a meaningful constraint on out-of-control borrowing and spending.
Instead, political and media sages present the nation with spuriously precise discussions about fictional fiscal outcomes way into the future – using rules which are deliberately designed to kick arithmetic realities into the long grass ....
An increasingly expensive, over-bearing, out of control state is not the answer to Britain problems.
But unless we change course, it will certainly be our downfall.
Please like/share if you think what I'm saying is important – and if fiscal realities should feature more prominently in our national debate.

ITV spent a year undercover inside Reform for a documentary.
I'm in it. Doing what? Sitting a candidate down and grilling him.
Now Labour and Lib Dem politicians across the North East are queuing up to attack me for it. One says I shouldn't be training candidates because of my "inflammatory" views.
Let's get this straight. Reform gets filmed actually vetting a candidate, and the parties who barely vet theirs at all are the ones complaining?
These are the same people trying to overturn the biggest mandate the British people have ever given. The same people who shrug while County Durham becomes an illegal migrant dumping ground. And the same lot that smear good people as being far right, thugs, nazis and more.
I'll take no lectures from them on being divisive or inflammatory.

Whatever your view, Labour has no principle on masked protest. They have a preference. Mask up for Palestine Action and you're a conscientious objector against ‘genocide’. Mask up over your own nation’s borders placing our women and girls at risk and you're a national emergency.

If I were to drive to Dover port with no valid passport/or an expired passport /or no other ID I would be stopped and turned back at the booth of the French Border officers.
If I put my toe down or ran off to attempt to get to a ferry I would be pursued, arrested, maybe charged and forcibly removed.
And yet our police (Public servants supposed to be protecting the British public) in Portsmouth yesterday were protecting and facilitating 140 undocumented, unidentifiable and illegal intruders from Cherbourg.

Dear British People,
Please accept the fate of your island quietly.
We have chosen to let in hundreds of thousands of undocumented males from misogynist cultures but you are not allowed to protest.
Any peaceful protest will be viewed as “thuggish and intimidating” because you’re all ghastly white working-class people, aren’t you? Bigots!
What, a twelve-year-old boy raped?
What, an 80-year-old man raped in a churchyard by an illegal migrant?
Rhiannon Whyte stabbed 23 times in the head by an illegal migrant who had arrived 11 weeks earlier?
Perfectly normal. Keep things in proportion. As Are Andy says those men have “other norms”.
We appreciate you have voted at every general election against immigration and you want illegal migrants deported. And we have ignored you for many years.
So now you think voting doesn’t work.
Fair enough, we understand
your concerns. But that is no excuse to take things into your own hands!
Rest assured your government is doing everything it can to do nothing to stop the boats.
We will launch a crackdown against anybody who tries to actually stop the boats.
Meanwhile, everyone must take their fair share of the unfairness nobody voted for.
Remember - Hope in every heart. A rapist in every postcode!

Remind me when you condemned these guys marching through the streets? Or is that different somehow, @NadiaWhittomeMP ?
When blackshirts are marching through the streets of Dover and Portsmouth, the focus shouldn’t be on the disruption they cause, but on their fascist ideology and deliberate intimidation of migrants and people of colour.
The far-right, whether in suits or balaclavas, threatens all of our hard-won rights and protections. We must resist their violence and hatred in every way we can.

But when it comes to actual peaceful patriots protecting our country from an illegal invasion, they instantly vilify them.

Jonathan Reynolds claims defence spending has already increased substantially under Labour. He repeated it in all his interviews on the Sunday morning round. Nobody called him out. Jon Sopel even agreed with him saying ‘I know’. Here are the facts about total defence spending in constant 2025/26 pounds:
2024/25: £62.3 billion, a figure inherited from the Tories.
2025/26: £62.0 billion — so a small real-terms fall in Labour’s first full year.
2026/27: planned and after Defence Investment Plan top up:£67.0 billion.
So a rise of under £5 billion from 24/25 despite growing international tensions/threats. And even that includes several Treasury fiddles. It’s peanuts compared with the threats/challenges.
Labour will double net zero subsidies to £40 billion between now and 2030. Giving away the Chagos Islands will cost many billions more. Both seem more of a priority than defence.

Taking more of the lowest paid out of paying tax is so sensible -surprising no other Party has committed to this
In Reform’s first 100 days, we will increase the Tax Free Personal Allowance to £15,000.
This will make the average working couple £1,000 better off.
Taxes are the highest they’ve been since WW2.
Why? Because the Tories and Labour waste your money. They’ve blown over £400 billion on migrant welfare and foreign aid this century.
We will cut the waste and cut your taxes.
We’ll cut migrant welfare, the boats and asylum, foreign aid, foreign social housing, the bloated civil service and quangos.
And yes, we’ll reform welfare. We’ll protect all those in need, but ensure that everyone able to work does so.
By cutting £80 billion of waste, we’ll reassure markets and bring down the insane debt interest payments.
That’s why we’ll be able to deliver this historic tax cut.
The Tories and Labour have destroyed your cost of living.
Only Reform will fix it.

Then what are you arguing about? I said from the start that Burnham was right to say it’s been a decade of slow growth. But thought he was wrong to say it had been ushered in by Brexit. Because though all Europe’s major economies had grown slowly, we’d actually grown a little bit faster than those who hadn’t left the EU. That doesn’t mean Brexit was right or wrong. It just means consult the facts before making big claims, Prime Minister.
