Some studios actually amplify this even further by inserting romantic elements and throwing them right in your face—the more you buy into the ship, the more invested you become. That way, they win over every kind of audience without ever losing their main audience.

As long as the author says nothing outright, as long as the characters never officially end up together, as long as the romantic elements can always be denied the "canon" label—authors and studios will keep doing this, for financial and practical reasons alike.

Which is why I had absolutely no doubt she'd fall in love with Subaru again—because I never read the amnesia as Tappei's way of sidestepping her feelings, and I'm fairly confident that's not why the plot line exists in the first place.
