Throughout Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week, we’ve covered several important topics to help you prepare for severe weather. Another key part of being prepared is knowing your county and where to go when severe weather strikes!
Knowing your county is important when monitoring local weather alerts, finding shelter and staying informed during an emergency.
📍 Take a few minutes today to identify your county.
🌪️ MEMA is practicing tornado safety!
Today, MEMA staff participated in a tornado safety drill by moving to the lowest floor of the State Emergency Operations Center and sheltering in an interior hallway.
We encourage all Mississippians to practice their tornado safety plans, too. Identify your safe place, know where to go, and make sure everyone in your household understands what to do when a tornado warning is issued.
Don't wait until severe weather threatens to practice!
Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Tornado Safety
🌪️ Do you know where to go when a tornado warning is issued?
🏘️The time to identify your safe place is BEFORE a tornado threatens.
🚫🪟Seek shelter in a basement or a small, interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. Protect your head and neck.
🎥 Watch today’s MEMA video to learn important tornado safety tips.
If you want to help people affected by Hurricane Isaias, connect with trusted organizations that are actively supporting communities. State and local emergency management agencies can provide information about reputable volunteer and donation organizations.
Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Flash Flooding
🌧️ Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
🌊Floodwater can be deeper and more dangerous than it appears. Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away a small car.
🚗Never walk or drive through floodwater. Turn around and find another route.
🎥 Watch today’s MEMA educational video to learn how to recognize flash flooding dangers and protect yourself.
