Delighted to finally get my hands on a print copy of this and pleased as punch to see my chapter on AV Liability in Great Britain in there too! You can order it here: link.springer.com/book/10.10…
More 2020 madness. My article on some of the problems with the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 has been awarded the #BILA Journal Article Prize for 2020. Pretty chuffed, to be honest.

Now it is official. "In relation to Israels military operations in Gaza, we conclude that Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes. Including extermination, murder, using starvation as a method of war, forcible transfer" (UN Human Rights Council)

It is horrible that the reaction in Israel to the film "NAZA" has been more outrage that the filmmakers revealed the Israeli military's callous indifference to Palestinian civilian life in Gaza than that the Israeli military committed these war crimes. trib.al/m2hgxSz

We are deeply alarmed by the disturbing reports of #HussamAbuSafiya being subjected to continued beatings, deliberate sleep deprivation, and threats against divulging his detention conditions while in Israeli custody.   Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Dr. Abu Safiya and all Palestinians arbitrary detained. Pending Dr. Hussam’s release, the Israeli Prison Service must ensure he is fully protected from abuse, granted urgent adequate and independent medical care and allowed immediate visitation by independent monitors.   Act now: amn.st/6012BGJOMn #FreeDrHussamAbuSafiya

When you're banning Oxfam and Save the Children from entering the country, you are.. the bad guys.
The Israeli diaspora minister has published a list of organisations whose members should not be allowed to enter Israel - the list includes Save the Children, Oxfam, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Pretty disappointing to see the amount of criticism being levelled at the Ethnic Minorities Law Centre for this case. Firstly, a lawyer/law firm is not the same as the client. Sometimes, lawyers take unpopular cases. Kellerman apparently qualifies for legal aid.

Forget the tabloid noise. Persuading SLAB you’ve got a case that warrants legal aid is actually quite difficult. This suggests that there is an arguable point of law at stake here. This does *not* mean Kellerman will definitely win. But it also suggests this claim isn’t…

…a complete waste of time either. Likewise, for those who can be bothered to read the website they’ve linked to, the EMLC also do discrimination work too. emlc.org.uk/what-we-do/discr…

“Ceasefire”
At least 11 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon. Lebanese officials said three children were among seven people killed when an Israeli strike hit a home in the village of Ansar. The Israeli military claimed it had hit Hezbollah infrastructure in response to an attack by the group on their troops. Lebanon's prime minister said it undermined efforts to stabilise the situation in the south of the country.

The disproportionate and bullying commentary and coverage of Jason Arday’s mistakes has been obviously dangerous for days. Yes it was a legitimate story, and in various ways a troubling one. But the relentless coverage, the vitriol and bile. The clip of a man talking about us needing more love in the world endlessly mocked. Compare it to the way others who embellished and invented life stories or floated seemingly naive ideas are forgiven. Obviously employers have duties of care. But spare us the pity of those who weaponised his story for social media clicks without a thought.

This investigation by the Financial Times is staggering in its findings and in its scope and methodological rigor. Some of the findings, backed up by incredible levels of forensic evidence: 1) Israel completed much of its systematic destruction across Israeli-occupied southern Lebanon after Israeli forces took control of already-emptied villages in mid-April, and after the April 17 ceasefire. The ceasefire was used to make these areas completely uninhabitable. 2) The scale of destruction is incredible. Roughly 85,000 housing units damaged or destroyed (likely an undercount); 62 villages and farms inside the "yellow line" occupation zone, covering ~6% of Lebanon and extending ~10km inland, with ~270,000 residents barred from returning. Over 20% of the south's farmland and forest destroyed, ancient olive groves worst hit. All Litani river bridges destroyed; at least 2,500km of water infrastructure gone. 3) This is stated policy and an intentional plan to make an entire area uninhabitable and never allow the population to return. Defence minister Israel Katz explicitly invoked the "Rafah and Beit Hanoun model" and later boasted of destroying "24 Lebanese villages… not house by house, but entire villages." 4) This is without a doubt a war crime. Destruction of property requires immediate military necessity and not speculative ideas that Hezbollah may use a building some day. Not allowing the return amounts to the ethnic cleansing of the area. The lack of any real consequences for Gaza, meant that Israel felt free to do the same in Lebanon. It is now doing the same in the West Bank. This will stop unless we stop it.
An FT visual investigation found systematic destruction across Israeli-occupied southern Lebanon, crippling systems essential to civilian life, from water and energy infrastructure to medical care. Raya Jalabi reports on the scale of the devastation. ft.trib.al/atpwoGT

Andrew Wiles worked on Fermat's Last Theorem alone in his attic for 7 years and told nobody except his wife. The problem was 358 years old. Fermat scribbled in a margin in 1637 that he had a proof and no room to write it, and every mathematician since had failed. Wiles saw the statement in a library book at 10 years old. He never let it go. He was a Princeton professor when he started in 1986. He stopped publishing new work and released old results in pieces to hide the silence. He announced it in Cambridge in June 1993, over 3 lectures, revealing the target only at the end. Newspapers ran it worldwide. Then a referee found a gap. One step in the proof did not hold, and the error was fundamental. He spent 14 months trying to close it in public view, with the whole field watching. He was ready to quit. The fix arrived in September 1994. He has said he stared at it in disbelief for 20 minutes. The BBC filmed him describing that moment. He gets a few words out, then turns away from the camera in tears. He kept the greatest result of the century secret so nobody could take it.

I know nothing about Burnham or his politics. But I see nothing wrong with the former mayor of Manchester wearing clothes from one of the last factories trying to keep a regional manufacturing tradition alive and employing skilled garment workers at fair wages in the process.
