I think one of the biggest reasons Fela Kuti’s legacy remains alive today is the consistent work of his family to preserve and celebrate his greatness.
Since 2000, Yeni & Femi Kuti through Felabration have brought together generations of artists, including some of today’s biggest Afrobeats stars, to honour the legend who paved the way and continues to influence African music and culture.
There’d never be another Fela in this lifetime.
Interesting Facts About Fela Kuti
1 – The only African Performer inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
2 – Fela rarely performed the same song twice, choosing to debut new, unrecorded material live. Many of his classics were first captured during live performances.
3 – Nigeria's most sampled artist, with his music continuing to influence musicians across genres worldwide.
4 – One of the most recorded artists in the world, leaving behind an extraordinary catalog of music and live recordings.
5 – The only African to receive a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Since the inception of Felabration in 2000, Fela’s children, Yeni, Femi Kuti, together with the Kuti family, have continued to use this festival to celebrate Fela’s legacy every year

“Who said Afrobeat is dead” – on Saturday the 31st of January 2026, the Grammys are honouring its architect with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The bands, the festivals, the samples, the protests… all still moving to Fela’s pulse.
The man may be gone. The movement is not.
A man who created Afrobeat, turned music into a weapon, and paid for truth with his body is finally recognized on that stage.
This honour isn’t about trends. It’s about a foundation the world is still standing on.
