The Press Club of India is shocked and deeply concerned that the Delhi Police decided to detain at least two journalists who were covering a protest at Jantar Mantar on September 25 regarding actions of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. We urge the @DelhiPolice to apologise to the journalists who were not able to work and whose equipment was lost because of this incident, and to refrain from acting in this manner in the future.

One of the most outrageous election statistics under Gyanesh Kumar. In Kundarki bye-election in 2024, mostly BJP voters were able to vote. Result? BJP got 77% vote share in a seat with more than 50% Muslim voters. This is official EC data.

The Federation of Press Clubs endorse the demand of @MadrasJournos for an impartial investigation into the conduct of @DelhiPolice and condemns the manhandling and illegal detention of Frontline reporter of Vedaant Lakhera.
Chennai Press Club strongly condemns the reported high-handed action of the Delhi Police against Frontline reporter Vedaant Lakhera. A journalist asking police personnel to identify themselves and provide their names and badge numbers cannot be a justification for forcibly removing, dragging or detaining a journalist. Such conduct is unacceptable and undermines the freedom of the press and the right of journalists to perform their professional duties without intimidation. Chennai Press Club demands that the incident be investigated and appropriate action be taken against those responsible. Journalists must be allowed to work freely and without fear.

The Federation of Press Clubs condemns the intimidation of Divya Shrivastava for asking questions at a press conference hosted by @CMOfficeUP, Yogi Adityanath. Asking questions to people holding high offices is the primary job of journalists.

Mr Anurag Kumar @CPDelhi @DelhiPolice , Informing an individual's family during interrogation or detention is a legal mandate, not an optional courtesy. Yesterday, I was taken for interrogation after my morning walk under the assurance that it would take very little time. However, as the hours stretched on, my repeated requests to inform my wife of my whereabouts ,the concerned Police Officials/Officer simply stated they were "following instructions." I was only permitted to make a call at 6:38 PM, leaving my family & friends in total panic the entire day. I request that you issue clear instructions to all units directing officers to strictly uphold the legal duty of immediately informing the family of any person taken for interrogation , so that no citizen’s family has to endure the distress that mine suffered.

The Federation of Press Clubs call upon the @CPDelhi to launch an investigation against the accused police officers posted at the Saket Police Station. At the same time @PressCouncil_IN and @India_NHRC should launch an independent investigation into the incident.
The Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Delhi Union of Journalists, Press Association, and Kerala Union of Working Journalist strongly condemn and call for punitive action against Delhi Police officials posted at the Saket Police Station, including the Station House Officer (SHO), for brutally assaulting freelance journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan while they were reporting about the inauguration of a new wing at the Max Hospital in Saket by Home Minister, Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta.
