Somali Flag Day I extend my heartfelt congratulations and remembrance to the freedom fighters and elders who led Somalia to independence, and to Mohamed Awale Liban, who designed the blue flag that is our national symbol today. If they were alive today and could see the condition of the country for which they fought, they would face deep sorrow and serious questions. The Somali flag represents dignity, unity and nationhood. But its dignity is truly upheld when we protect our statehood, sovereignty and national borders—on land and at sea. Since Somalia’s collapse, our country has endured great hardship. Many leaders who have held public office bear responsibility for failing to safeguard the nation’s dignity and interests. Today, we do not have a Somali force that fully secures the country’s borders. Yet there are forces that attack or detain the citizens they were meant to protect. For this reason, Somali Flag Day should be an occasion to reflect on the realities we face and to hold ourselves accountable for our national responsibilities. As some of those holding the country’s highest offices celebrate the flag, they must also consider the reality of the country. A celebration that fails to confront that reality cannot be complete. Countries that have strengthened their nationhood use national days to reinforce unity, protect their borders, build their institutions and defend their sovereignty. Somali Flag Day should inspire us to rebuild our unity, statehood and national capacity. Our flag deserves respect. Its dignity is protected through action, responsibility and the defence of Somali nationhood. #somalia #flag

Today, I attended a consultative meeting between the Special Committee of the Puntland House of Representatives, which is reviewing the proposed revision of the Constitution, and representatives of Puntland’s political parties. The meeting focused on provisions related to the electoral process, the political system and the advancement of democracy in Puntland. As Chairman of the Horseed Party, I shared the Party’s views and recommendations on the proposed constitutional revision, particularly on improving the electoral process and strengthening democracy in Puntland. I also highlighted the considerable effort I have personally made, alongside the Horseed Party, to support the review and alignment of Puntland’s electoral laws and Constitution. This effort and the related consultations have been ongoing for nearly two years. I stressed that any revision of the Constitution should be based on broad consultation, shared understanding and the protection of the public interest of the people of Puntland. #Somalia #Puntland

On Saturday evening, I attended an event organised in my honour by the Puntland community in Melbourne, Australia. During the event, I spoke about the general situation in Somalia and Puntland. I also provided an update on Puntland’s health sector and the ongoing work of the Ministry of Health, which I currently have the responsibility of leading. I answered questions from community members concerning Puntland’s health situation, healthcare services, and our plans to strengthen and improve the health system. I sincerely thank the Puntland community in Melbourne for their warm welcome and for organising this valuable event. I also extend my appreciation to the leaders and members of other Somali communities who attended, particularly the Galmudug and Jubaland communities. #Somalia #Australia

I strongly condemn the forced eviction of families from their homes in Mogadishu’s Yaaqshiid district. Somalia’s former leadership must be held accountable for ordering and carrying out these actions against its own citizens. International human-rights standards are clear: people cannot simply be driven from their homes without due process, adequate notice, consultation, legal protection and safeguards against homelessness. UN guidelines recognize forced evictions carried out without such protections as potentially constituting gross violations of internationally recognized human rights. What happened in Yaaqshiid demands international attention. I call on the UN, Somalia’s international partners and human-rights organizations to condemn these actions, demand accountability and stand with the families whose homes and livelihoods have been affected. Somali citizens deserve protection from their government — not forced displacement by it. #Somalia

This agreement represents an important opportunity to strengthen Puntland’s security institutions through long-term investment in training, intelligence cooperation, and institutional capacity. If implemented effectively, it can enhance counterterrorism efforts against ISIS and Al-Shabaab while contributing to the security of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Strong partnerships, capable institutions, and accountable implementation will be key to realizing its full strategic value. #Somalia

Today, I received a delegation from KfW Development Bank and UNICEF, led by Janis Müller-Späth, at the Puntland Ministry of Health headquarters. We shared an overview of Puntland’s health sector, the progress achieved in expanding health services, and the Ministry’s priorities for the coming period. KfW has financed critical health infrastructure in Puntland, including Garowe General Hospital, Burtinle Hospital, Ba’adweyn Hospital, and Galdogob Hospital. The visit focused on reviewing the performance of these facilities and identifying the critical needs required to enable them to effectively deliver essential health services to the communities they serve. @KfW_FZ_int @unicefsomalia #somalia #puntland

Today, I participated in a Steering Committee meeting for the establishment of the Puntland Development Fund (PDF), an initiative that I am proud to be part of. The creation of this fund has been under development for the past six months, with its official launch expected in the coming months. Puntland and its people will provide the initial contribution, demonstrating local ownership and commitment to sustainable development. The Puntland Development Fund will serve as a financing mechanism for development projects across Puntland. The Fund itself will not implement projects directly; rather, it will mobilize and provide financing for initiatives that advance economic growth, infrastructure, public services, and community development. As a Federal Member State of Somalia and an integral part of the country’s federal system, Puntland has, throughout its existence, benefited from international assistance and reconstruction support provided by Somalia’s development partners. At the same time, Puntland has consistently contributed its own resources to the financing of many of its economic infrastructure projects. The people of Puntland have also played a leading role in investing in and building critical infrastructure, with landmark projects such as the Garacad Port standing as a testament to the power of local initiative, public participation, and shared commitment to development. The establishment of this Fund marks an important step toward strengthening local resource mobilization and increasing Puntland’s capacity to finance its own development priorities while complementing support from international partners. #Puntland #DevelopmentFund #Somalia @SwissMFA

Today, I officially launched the Puntland Health Strategic Plan 2026–2030, a roadmap that sets the direction for strengthening and expanding healthcare services across Puntland. The highest priority of this strategy is the expansion of primary healthcare services and reaching vulnerable populations, particularly mothers, children, persons with disabilities, rural and remote communities, and people affected by emergencies and climate change. We firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental right, and no individual should be denied access to essential health services because of distance, financial hardship, or social circumstances. The strategy outlines a clear commitment to strengthening primary healthcare facilities, expanding outreach services to underserved communities, and ensuring that maternal and child health services, immunization, nutrition programs, communicable disease control, and emergency healthcare services reach all people across Puntland. #Somalia

I am deeply concerned that Mogadishu may be heading toward a political confrontation that could reverse the hard-earned progress made by the Somali people after decades of civil war and the devastation caused by terrorism. It is unfortunate that a leader widely regarded as one of Somalia’s most experienced politicians, and who has twice been entrusted with the presidency, appears unwilling to step aside after the completion of his constitutional term and peacefully transfer authority to the Somali people who elected him. I also wish to address the international community. While international partners have invested heavily in supporting Somalia’s recovery, public services, humanitarian programs, and the fight against terrorism, there has been insufficient accountability for political leaders who engage in corruption, misuse public resources, and attempt to retain power beyond their mandate. The time has come for concrete measures against individuals who undermine democracy and stability. I urge the United States, the European Union, the African Union, and other international partners to consider targeted sanctions, including asset freezes, travel restrictions, and investigations into public funds allegedly transferred abroad. Somalia cannot afford to jeopardize thirty years of sacrifice, reconstruction, and international support. The Somali people deserve peace, constitutional governance, and a democratic transfer of power. @StateDept @US2SOMALIA @EU_in_Somalia @EU_Commission @AUC_MoussaFaki @Africacenter
🚨 MOGADISHU TENSIONS: Sheikh Sharif relocates as opposition gears up for June 4th protests. Political tensions are rising rapidly in Mogadishu ahead of the planned opposition protests this week. 📍 Former President Sheikh Sharif has relocated to a new area in the capital amid shifting political dynamics. 🪧 The opposition is intensifying its final preparations and mobilizing citizens for mass demonstrations on Thursday, June 4th. 🛑The federal administration is working behind the scenes, making last-minute efforts to diffuse the situation and prevent the protests from taking place. On this International Workers’ Day, I extend my deepest appreciation to the health workers of Puntland and across Somalia. For more than three decades, Somali health professionals have carried an extraordinary burden, serving communities while the country endured state collapse, civil conflict, terrorist attacks, droughts, and repeated humanitarian crises. Despite these immense challenges, they continued to stand on the frontlines with resilience, courage, and commitment to saving lives. Today, we honor their sacrifice, dedication, and service to the people of Somalia. #InternationalWorkersDay #LabourDay #Somalia #Puntland
