We study and share what Farmers do - The sabbatical
When I hear two of the most influential people in Ag suggest something simultaneously, we sit up and take notice.
They're both big supporters of the sabbatical for Farmers and Ag business owners.
Why? Not only does it give you a break from the Farm/business; it gives the Farm/business a break from you.
Let’s say a sabbatical must be at least a 3-month reprieve.
There is a bit to organise before the sabbatical comes to fruition. But it’s a step toward your Farm/business being able to cope in your absence. That's a wish for many.
Do you agree that you need a break from your Farm/business? Do you agree that your Farm/buiness needs a break from you?

We study and share what Farmers do - The “more on” approach questioned
We are seeing increased activity among Cropping Farmers exploring alternatives to their current cropping regime.
The current system works, but it’s expensive, and we all know that money talks. The "more on" approach works when things go our way.
Croppers don’t want to change completely; they just want to tinker and get some cost relief.
We wrote about 3 different Farmers who are doing some tinkering in Yesterday’s Agletter.
Are you looking to tinker with your Cropping model?

We study and share what Farmers do - Getting paid for what you know - We’re starting a new newsletter
We advocate that everyone should have a side hustle, so we better practise what we preach.
That side hustle is a new newsletter, and it’s called Better Get A Newsletter. You can sign up here for free: bettergetanewsletter.com
We have been writing about getting paid for what you know. And this newsletter will unlock how you can do it.
The newsletter industry and creative space is going nuts in the US, and it’s about to kick here.
Are you just a little bit interested in the get-paid-for-what-you-know space?
Have a great Monday.

We study and share what Farmers do - From half rooted to fully rooted
This morning in our Agletter, we wrote about two issues we see that will start presenting themselves in the next month or two.
The first one is our roads here in Victoria. I travelled down the worst stretch of road from Newbridge to Bridgewater a few days back. The depth of the holes has to be seen to be believed. The issue is that with a big Harvest coming up, many heavy 44-tonne B Doubles will be travelling these roads, and they'll go from half rooted to fully rooted.
The second issue, which will mainly be focused in SA and Vic, is where we're going to put all the Grain this Harvest. A good problem to have. Could it be the year where we tip it on the ground and pick it up later?
Two questions. What do you think the roads will be like after a big Harvest? Where's all this Grain going to go?

We study and share what Farmers do - Old things as an industry
For many of us, the new world doesn't feel like the old world, and as we graduate through life, we seem to reflect more on what was once.
Therefore, we find solace in old things. We buy these things and keep them close handy.
Look at the old Holden Utes; people love buying, repairing, or restoring them.
Some Farmers I know sold the Farm Tractor 40 years ago only to track it down to buy it back.
The hand-me-down furniture that was in the old family homestead means something.
Sometimes we get the opportunity to buy family Land back. You know: “We have to buy it because it’s McGregor country”.
Do you find that as you get older, you get drawn more to the things of your past?

We study and share what Farmers do - The side hustle
We are strong believers that everyone should have a side hustle. It can be a side hustle that fits within your core business or job. Or it can be something completely removed.
Some people make money from their side hustles, and others do it just to stay sane.
We know of a few side hustles started on Farms that turn out to be bigger businesses than the Farm itself.
The Farmers Club Agletter was my side hustle, and we turned it into a business.
What is your side hustle? And do you make money from it, or is it more of an outlet thing?

We study and share what Farmers do - if Bill's knee is twitching it's going to rain
The weather is an inexact science.
But as humans, we are so fixated with it, so much so, that it's the opening line of a conversation. You know: “G’day mate, hi mate, Geez it’s cold”.
We have a saying: "Don’t farm to the forecast", yet people, time and time again, still allow themselves to be dictated to by these long-range forecasts.
Fairytale stuff.
A climate-change-sceptic Farmer mate of mine says the weather authorities can’t get it right 5 days out, yet they are telling us what it’ll be like in 40 years.
If you want some form of accuracy with the weather, consult Bill.

We study and share what Farmers do - Answer the phone
Private enterprise is tough going right now. Small, medium, and large businesses are struggling with a range of things. Most of it is government-induced.
Business people are complaining, and rightly so.
But some of those businesses complaining are the same ones that won’t answer the phone, don’t get back to people, and never reply to communication that comes their way. Some do it intermittently.
By not answering or responding, you are building a reputation. One for all the wrong reasons
Answer the phone…

We study and share what Farmers do - The too-much-debt funk
I read something last week that went like this: “When we have too much debt, the liquidity disappears, and we lose the ability to solve problems".
Those who have had too much debt at some point in their lives would understand this.
When you're a Farmer with too much debt, I reckon there is something more important than not being able to solve problems because of a lack of cash. It’s missing opportunities that can actually get us out of our too-much-debt funk.
Have you missed opportunities due to a lack of money?
