Having listened to the majority of the Jerry Dipoto presser my main takeaways are as follows - Major negative emotions surrounding the defense, “being a bad defender is a choice”. Will the front office make necessary moves to the player groups to help or will a new fielding coach be enough for them? - The hiring process for Dan and the next manager will be different and they seemed to have learned from their mistakes in that hiring process. Dipoto said the process will be exhaustive and they “will hire the best available candidate”. - A clear focus on how poor the team communication was top to bottom. I’m going to lump the team culture into this as well. New and clearer voices will be needed and the acknowledgment of a lack of motivation to shift the culture was stated clearly. BUT ULTIMATELY, words don’t matter unless the actions follow suit. All the sentiments from today’s presser are fine and dandy but please show us, don’t tell us. Getting out in front of a variety of glaring issues on day 1 of what looks to be a very bizarre offseason is good but we’ve played these games before.
