Today I am sharing a new preprint and accompanying blog post. Hundreds of published papers include impossible western blots showing protein expression in cell lines that have deleted or mutated genes. These clumsy mistakes are widespread and repeated by LLMs.

1/ Two really fun reviews just landed back to back in Current Biology, both on a question I never get tired of: why did animals take over when they did? One argues animals engineered their own world. The other argues oxygen and temperature had to line up first.

🧬🌊 New preprint from our lab: DO1 Cas9, the first Cas9 nuclease characterised from the deep ocean — recovered from a metagenome at 1,500 m in the Atlantic.
❄️Cold-adapted: it cuts DNA efficiently at low temperature, where mesophilic SpCas9 retains only residual activity. 🧵1/4

What a cool paper.
LUCA had an incomplete metabolism and needed a host, like a symbiont, to serve its mead. But LUCA's host was a hydrothermal vent. What do we call it?
Symgeont (?)
It gets better, as LBCA and LACA independently figured out how to brew the mead themselves.
