A new University of Massachusetts Amherst/WCVB poll of 800 registered Massachusetts voters (conducted Oct. 5–12), shows Democratic Gov. Maura Healey @MassGovernor holding a commanding 25-point lead over Republican challenger Mike Minogue @mikeminoguema in the 2026 gubernatorial race (57% to 32%, with independent Andrea James at 6%). Healey’s advantage is driven largely by a wide gender gap (66–24 among women versus 47–42 among men), strong support among college-educated voters, and a 58% job-approval rating—her highest since February 2025—while voters trust her over Minogue by 20–30 points on key issues including abortion, education, health care, immigration, and crime. Minogue faces a major obstacle in that more than 80% of voters view him as similar to President Donald Trump on issues such as abortion, immigration, health care, taxes, and transgender rights, and the words most frequently associated with him include “MAGA,” “Republican,” and “Unknown.” In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Democrat Ed Markey @SenMarkey leads Republican John Deaton @JohnEDeaton1 by more than 25 points (roughly 56–29), and Democrats hold large leads in other statewide contests.

Dear President Kornbluth and Chairman Gorenberg, Yesterday, as I am sure you are aware, a Boston jury unanimously found that @MIT professor Kristin Knouse defamed David Sabatini, falsely accused him of rape and sexual harassment, and tortuously interfered with his contractual arrangements including his tenure at MIT. MIT and its tenure review committee relied on Professor Knouse’s statements when it took away David’s tenure and terminated him. MIT's policies explicitly prohibit harassment, retaliation, and fabrication of claims. Falsely accusing a colleague of rape and sexual harassment and pushing for his termination under false pretenses are clearly violations of MIT policy. In light of the unanimous findings of the jury after five years of discovery, many legal motions and countermotions by both parties, and a three-week trial in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston: Is MIT going to take away Knouse’s tenure and terminate her? If not, why not? Is MIT going to restore David’s tenure, and apologize for firing him? If not, why not? In light of what has transpired in this grave miscarriage of justice, MIT has the opportunity and the obligation to right a serious wrong here. At a minimum, the public deserves transparency into what actions MIT is taking in this case as taxpayers are major funders of MIT. Sincerely, Bill Ackman
A civil jury ruled in favor of ex-MIT scientist David Sabatini, who was accused by a younger colleague of inappropriate sexual conduct in his Cambridge research lab, and awarded him $6 million in damages. trib.al/s3v9VIX

There are nine approved ballot questions in Massachusetts for Nov 3. The booklet they mail out to read is almost 100 pages. So I came up with 9 quizzes that help you decide each ballot question and explain to you exactly what a yes or no means: massvoter.com/races/question… You can also track your processes. Feedback appreciated!

Elder services providers grappling with surging caseloads and funding deficits are bracing for new state directives that will curtail access to home care programs. The Healey administration on Feb. 1 plans to tighten eligibility criteria for older adults enrolling in the state-funded Enhanced Community Options Program (ECOP), which serves frail individuals who clinically qualify for nursing homes but are able to receive intensive at-home care. By the start of March, the state will then impose a cap on the number of available ECOP slots

The Massachusetts justice system is horrible. In Fall River, former Mayor Flanagan was stabbed multiple times in the face and neck by a man let out early with 15 arrest, most with violent charges. We all know the Lindsay Clancy trial results.
🚨 A man CONVICTED OF R*PING A 72-YEAR-OLD NONVERBAL NURSING-HOME PATIENT was freed after COURTROOM ERRORS overturned his conviction. Now he's accused of R*PE & KIDNAPPING while out on bail. Massachusetts authorities charged Mihail Lujan, 40, of West Springfield, with r*pe and kidnapping this week following alleged attacks involving a 44-year-old homeless woman. A police report alleges Lujan forced the woman to perform s*x acts during incidents in West Springfield this summer while he was free on bail. Lujan was free because the Massachusetts Appeals Court overturned his previous r*pe conviction on Dec. 10, 2025, and returned the case to Hampden Superior Court for a possible retrial. That case began at a West Springfield nursing home on March 27, 2013. Lujan, then 27, was working as a housekeeper through a contracted cleaning company. The patient was 72, HAD DEMTENTIA, could not move without assistance and could not speak. A nurse put the woman to bed and left the privacy curtain open. When the nurse returned, the curtain was closed—and she allegedly found Lujan behind it with the patient undressed. The woman was taken to Baystate Medical Center. A Hampden County grand jury indicted Lujan on a r*pe charge in April 2013. The case was delayed after West Springfield police used a Russian-speaking college intern to interpret an interview with Lujan, whose native and primary language is Moldovan. The Massachusetts Appeals Court upheld the suppression of his statements in 2018 after finding serious problems with the interpretation. The court determined that much of the interview attributed to Lujan was not actually “his.” A bench trial eventually ended with Lujan being found guilty on April 25, 2023. He was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in state prison. Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said violence and s*xual as$ault against the most vulnerable would be met with his office’s “most diligent efforts.” But in 2025, the Appeals Court overturned the conviction because two substitute forensic analysts testified using notes and reports prepared by analysts who did not appear in court. The court ruled that the testimony violated Lujan’s constitutional right to confront the witnesses against him—and that the error was not harmless. His guilty verdict was set aside, and he was released on bail while prosecutors considered retrying the case. Lujan, a Moldovan national, had previously been expected to face federal deportation proceedings after serving his sentence. Instead, he was released because of errors in the prosecution of the nursing-home case. It's NO SURPRISE he is now accused of targeting another vulnerable woman. The new charges have not been proven in court, and Lujan is presumed innocent unless convicted. Prosecutors have not publicly confirmed whether they will retry him in the nursing-home case. #Massachusetts #PublicSafety
