In Japan, a guest never asks for food twice. He waits, with honor.
In Oklahoma, I was offered food fourteen times. Fourteen times, I answered with honor.
"I am good."
In Oklahoma, "I'm good" means no thank you. Nobody told me for six hours.
Fourth of July. Big Ron's backyard outside Tulsa. Ron built his smoker from a 250 gallon oil tank and a boat trailer. It had been running since Thursday. He calls it Mama.
I had fasted two days out of respect for Mama.
Ron sliced the first brisket. Juice ran to his elbow.
"You want some, Nobu?"
I stood tall, so he would know I was worthy.
"I am good."
"Alright, no worries!" He handed my plate to his cousin.
A samurai does not ask twice. I waited.
Ron's son Tyler came by with ribs. "Ribs, man?"
"I am very good."
"Right on." The ribs left with him.
A neighbor named Crystal brought corn, butter running off both ends. "Corn, hon?"
"I am extremely good."
"Well, good for you!"
My stomach made a sound like a war horn across a valley. Ron's dog turned around to look at me.
Hour four. A boy offered me a Coke from the cooler.
"I am good. I have never been better."
"Cool." He drank it right there in front of me.
Grandma Pearl, who is 84 and still mows her own acre, carried a whole pecan pie across the yard.
"Baby, you want pie?"
I bowed low. "Madam, I am as good as a man can be."
She patted my cheek. "Bless your heart." The pie went back with her.
Hour six. I stood beside forty pounds of brisket like a guard at a gate. I could hear it breathing.
Then Ron's wife, Brenda, looked at me over a bowl of banana pudding.
"Honey. When did you last eat?"
"Tuesday. I am good."
She set the pudding down slowly.
"Ron. RON. He thinks 'I'm good' means he's GOOD."
Ron dropped his tongs.
What happened next was a rescue. Ron threw Mama open and smoke rolled across the yard like a battlefield. Plates went hand to hand down a line of eleven Oklahomans, smoker to chair. Tyler ran ribs. Three kids sprinted pie. Grandma Pearl returned with the pecan pie and a second pie nobody knew she had. A man I never met aimed his truck headlights at me so nobody would miss a bite.
The whole yard chanted. "EAT! EAT! EAT!"
Nine plates. I unbuckled one piece of armor. Then two more. The fireworks started. They were for America, but the timing was excellent.
At midnight Ron sat beside me. I could not lift my arms.
"You good, Nobu?"
I was full to the eyebrows. I told him the truth.
"I am good."
Ron shot out of his chair. "BRENDA! HE'S GOOD AGAIN!"
Eleven people ran for plates.

Four days after 9/11, on September 15, 2001, a man stood outside his gas station in Mesa, Arizona, planting flowers.
That same morning, he had donated money to help the victims of the attacks.
Hours later, he was murdered.
His killer believed he was connected to 9/11 and wanted revenge.
But the man had absolutely nothing to do with the attacks.
He wasn't a terrorist.
He wasn't a suspect.
He wasn't even under investigation.
He was an innocent American.
His name was Balbir Singh Sodhi.
He was a Sikh immigrant, a business owner, a husband, a brother, and a member of a community that he cared deeply about.
The turban he wore as part of his faith made him a target for someone consumed by hatred and ignorance.
Balbir Singh Sodhi became the first person killed in a hate crime backlash after 9/11.
Twenty-four years later, his story remains a reminder of what happens when grief turns into blind rage and people are judged by how they look instead of who they are.
The victims of terrorism deserve to be remembered.
So do the innocent people who were attacked because others couldn't tell the difference.
Remember his name.
Balbir Singh Sodhi.

If @RepAndyBiggsAZ wants to be governor, voters deserve answers to why he protects sexual predators.
Andy,
Why did you vote against requiring sex offenders who moved to AZ to re-register locally?
Why did you block bipartisan legislation targeting sexual abuse in Colorado City?

Mess Attendant Second Class Doris “Dorie” Miller awoke at 6 am. His first duty was to collect the crew’s laundry from deep in the hold of his ship. Miller was a big man, a gentle giant standing 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighing over 200 pounds. Very few of his fellow sailors made fun of his first name. Nobody ever did it twice.
Miller had been at work for nearly two hours when a violent shudder hurled him against the steel bulkhead. The USS West Virginia was under attack.
It was December 7th, 1941.
Over the course of that distant and chaotic morning, Miller helped move his captain to safety, commandeered a deck mounted anti-aircraft machine gun and, by the reckoning of some crew members, shot down between four and six Japanese aircraft. He also helped move crew members to safety at great personal risk. Miller saved many lives that day.
In the reflective aftermath of battle, while the Navy counted their dead, they also counted their heroes. Mess Attendant Miller was recognised as one of America’s first heroes of World War II. They awarded him the Navy Cross and a promotion.
He should have received the Medal of Honour.
The Frigate USS Miller (FF-1091) was later named for him. The planned aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller (CVN-81) is about to be.
Or is it?
CNN reports that three high-level sources inside the Trump orbit say that Trump wants that ship named for himself. Ominously, the ship’s name has recently been rebranded by its hull classification number CVN-81 only, and the name USS Miller has been scrubbed from the official record.
Of course that’s what Trump wants. Miller was a black man, and the draft-dodging, racist creep knows his bigoted base won’t begrudge him stealing the name of the new carrier from an African American for himself. As long as the hero it was named for wasn’t white.
I am tired of that child-raping, lying douchebag carving out stolen honours for himself. A White House ballroom for a man with no balls, an arch for an arch criminal, the Peace Prize for a piece of shit, the chiseller’s name chiselled into the Kennedy Centre — all that is bad enough.
But there is no place for a craven, whiny, tantrum-throwing man-child on the hull of an American aircraft carrier. None.
Nearly two years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Doris Miller died in battle defending his country. He was 24. He was buried with full honours. A granite marker was dedicated to his life and heroism in his hometown of Waco, Texas.
Draft-dodging Trump and the monsters who serve him have earned no such dedications, no statues, no official praise, nothing but contempt — and prison. One day history will assign them the villainy they deserve, and their names will, like the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, forever live in infamy.

Someone once asked me:
“It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.
But how does the warrior stay a warrior when life becomes peaceful?”
I thought about that for a while.
And I think the question may be backwards.
A warrior in a garden does not spend every morning proving that he is still a warrior.
He tends the garden.
He protects what has grown there.
He fixes what is broken.
He teaches the young.
He does the difficult things nobody sees.
And when the people he loves can sleep without fear, he does not wonder whether he has become weak.
That was the point.
Perhaps peace does not mean the warrior has lost his purpose.
Perhaps peace is what all that training was for.
We spend so much of our lives asking:
Am I still strong?
Am I still useful?
Am I still respected?
Do I still matter?
Maybe those are the wrong questions.
Look at what is under your protection.
Is your family safe?
Are the people around you stronger because you are there?
Did you do what needed to be done today, even when nobody was watching?
Then the warrior is still there.
A sword is not valuable because it is always drawn.
Sometimes its highest purpose is making sure it never needs to be.
Take care of your garden.
That may be the greatest battle you ever win.

I was a 911 dispatcher for 11 years and this is the worst idea you could possibly think of. You have scenarios where the person can’t speak well either language barriers, injuries or if they’re in a domestic situation and they pretend to call for pizza or something you need a person. You have to be able to determine how someone feels or pick up on what they aren’t saying or how they’re saying things. Same goes for open lines and hang ups. A real person needs to answer the phone not only to ensure the correct response is sent to the right place but to offer piece of mind to the caller and makes them feel safer. Situations where I had to give CPR instructions to a mother and father who’s baby wasn’t breathing was a constant occurrence and you have to be able to calm people down, an AI is not doing that ever. Same goes for dispatching calls, AI cannot do that, in theory it sounds ok for that portion but you have to acknowledge what resources are on hand, where people are, GPS isn’t always accurate so when we started using systems to automatically reroute units who were flagged as “closer” they usually weren’t. But a real person who lives in that county and knows the area, where the stations are, who’s in a move up or coverage or areas that are blocked off due to events that aren’t always in our mapping systems. The list goes on.
Terrible idea
AI is now answering 911 calls in New Orleans.
The AI handles incoming calls and is supposed to analyze and prioritize the calls so that if multiple people phone in about the same incident, the chatbot will handle the repetitive calls about the same incident.
Critics warn that the automatic speech recognition systems may cause problems, the AI may hold hidden biases, and that human 911 responders are needed.

Victims deserve lasting protections, and offenders who have committed heinous acts should not have the opportunity to reinsert themselves into the lives of those they harmed.
Kayleigh’s Law ensures that our criminal justice system works for victims, not against them. I was pleased to help lead this bill out of the Judiciary Committee and look forward to supporting it on the U.S. House floor.
