5GW of gas. Higher costs. Greater climate risks. ⚠️
Civil society warns that government's gas procurement plans could undermine South Africa's Just Energy Transition and lock the country into costly fossil fuels.

🧵 @BankTrack and the #FairSteelCoalition are calling on banks to temporarily suspend finance to ArcelorMittal until the company has worked with communities to provide remedy and implemented safeguards to prevent future adverse impacts from occurring.
“Despite multiple warnings and interventions to the banks financing ArcelorMittal, the situation in Liberia remains dire for communities who have had their homes, crops, and livelihoods destroyed by #ArcelorMittal.
Enough is enough, it’s time for banks to start living up to their human rights commitments.” - John Nimly Brownell, Green Advocates of Liberia.

How much CO2 does a blast furnace emit? How much more carbon does a blast furnace pump out over its extended lifespan when relined?
The new Blast Furnace Emissions Calculator from @SteelWatch2030 puts the impacts of relining decisions into context, helping estimate how much a unit, plant, or company might emit under different relining scenarios.
Eliminating coal from steelmaking is a critical challenge, but many steelmakers continue to reline blast furnaces, extending their lives by decades and locking in long-term emissions.
This calculator shows the long-term risks of extending the lives of blast furnaces, underlining the responsibility every company has to phase them out in favour of near-zero-emissions technologies.

Consequently, defenders coexist in environments where all substantive elements of the right to a healthy environment are severely compromised by corporate activity.
These risks are compounded by limited information access, restricted public participation, and ineffective remedies.
