Congratulations to @UTexasLaw alum Rylan Maksoud, who will join @FairDefense to represent low-income Texans charged with “fine-only” criminal offenses. Rylan’s work is generously supported by Lisa Foster & Alan Bersin. Go Rylan!

🧵This weekend we’ll be talking about bail in Texas at #TribFest22. To ground our comments, we’ll be sharing stories of community members in Smith County whose stories illustrate the cruel consequences of wealth based detention in everyday communities across the state.

Devastating update: @HCSO has confirmed that yet *another* community member died in Harris county jail.
Nineteen lives lost in HCJ this year. Three in August alone.
When will Harris co leaders choose safety over punishment? When will this era of mass cruelty end?
Update: Another person died a couple of days ago pushing the custody death toll in Harris county jail to 18 this yr.

THREAD. Today researchers announced the most comprehensive study ever on a bail reform. They studied over 500,000 misdemeanor cases and found that reducing the use of money bail in Houston led to big decreases in jailing and likely *decreased* future crime.
