People shouldn’t have to pay for the same crime over and over again - they should be allowed to move forward and contribute to society. 💙Join us in our mission to reform criminal record checks and create a fairer, more proportionate system: fairchecks.org.uk
Valjean, not Javert… Great to be on @GBNEWS last night. People such as Louise Haigh MP who have committed a relatively minor crime, including of dishonesty, which is now spent should be allowed to succeed in professional life without stigma if they have shown good character since. This should apply to everyone, regardless of their social or political background. People should not have to endure being endlessly judged by the worst mistake they have made in their life. They should be allowed to move on. Indeed, those on the centre-right believe that people can improve their lot in life through their own efforts; an optimistic worldview which should also be extended to ex-criminals.

🚨🔊 In a newly-published youth justice white paper, the government have announced a commitment to ‘set out a targeted, proportionate package of potential reforms for the childhood criminal records regime, by the end of 2026.’

The proposals to build a more proportionate system are a step in the right direction - for example, getting rid of lifelong criminal records for offences like affray, and for short prison sentences, would reduce reoffending and support more people to be able to work.

A welcome and long overdue announcement from David Lammy. 👏 Childhood records can be a lasting barrier for people who are simply trying to move forward with their lives and contribute to society, years after their offence.
🔴 Mr Lammy is considering “simplifying” the system to ensure that checks are “proportionate” to their crime Read more ⬇️ telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

"There was loads of grown men egging the kids on to chuck stuff at the police." Should a child caught up in the 2024 riots have their entire future defined by that moment? @ChildrensComm reminds us how a broken system can shape young lives. @LongfordTrust
