ALT Reclaim The Frame white border on black background. Image of 4 female filmmakers - Jane Campion, Julia Durcournau, Justine Triet and Mati Diop BEYOND THE BOX OFFICE In Festival du Cannes 78-year history only three female filmmakers have won the prestigious Palme d'Or award. Jane Campion first won for THE PIANO in 1993, followed by (an unbelievable 18-year gap until 2021 when) Julia Ducournau's TITANE scooped the award. Patience is virtue as it was only 2 years until Justine Triet's Oscar winning ANATOMY OF A FALL took the Palme D'Or last year. In 2019, Mati Diop was the first black female filmmaker to ever be included in the competition, winning the Grand Prix for ATLANTICS (but missing out on the Palme Do'r). Will true parity ever come to Cannes?

ALT Reclaim The Frame white border on black background. Image of 6 people dancing, two women and four men. BEYOND THE BOX OFFICE THE PERSIAN VERSION, the cultural identity comedy written and directed Iranian- American, Maryam Keshavarz that rare thing a studio release helmed by a woman. In 2023, women directed just 11% of the top 100 grossing releases, and women of colour was less than 3%. And why do we need more of them? For one, is the way they upend movie made myths around gender to mass audiences. Look out for the film's formidable mamajoon (mother) a character the director dedicates to the fierce Iranian women out there.
