Wowza. I’m all for people studying Chinese history, culture, politics and languages but the jump from impartial learning to let’s get cosy with Beijing is huge and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Students are being taught that Britain must forge closer links with China in a textbook accused of peddling “propaganda”, The Telegraph can reveal.
The A-level book, widely used in schools by British teenagers studying Mandarin, says the UK should “deepen cooperation” with Beijing in the wake of Brexit ⤵️

"Tang said the police force was in the final stages of discussion with private shopping centres, with an aim of bringing 60,000 cameras into the integrated police system by 2028."
Are 60,000 surveillance cameras enough? Bet the police think not!

🕯️Today, Tat Cheng 鄭達鴻 spends his birthday unjustly imprisoned in #HongKong.
No one should spend time in prison for defending democracy.
We wish him a happy birthday and call for his immediate release, along with all political prisoners in Hong Kong

it is so heartbreaking seeing how Saudis treat anyone who works there whether Egyptians, South or South East Asians, when they’re just hard working people trying to make an honest living far away from their homes
At Sushi Masa (鮨政) in Sheung Wan, sushi can be beautiful as well as delicious. To see what I mean: look at these pieces of kawahagi (thread-sail filefish), including its liver; mirugai (geoduck); shiroika (white squid); and tako (octopus) suckers! 😍😋 #YellowEconomicCircle
I've been very indulgent and gone to Sushi Masa (鮨政), over in Sheung Wan, TWICE this month. Some offerings I ended up having at both those dinners 👇😋 #YellowEconomicCircle

It's bad enough that there are those who will seize on real incidents that are actually exceptions to the rule (Hongkongers who were actually out on the streets in 2019-20, I am sure you know what I am talking about) but now AI is being used to create fake images to upset people.

To put forward an useful analogy, prior to the 20th century or so, an East Asian state calling itself 中國 is like a contemporaneous Western Eurasian state calling itself Rome: clearly a meaningful and important political claim, but it doesn't mean the state was Italian
How long were they negligent (or worse) before this was all discovered?? And would this kind of thing have been uncovered much earlier if the authorities focused on Hongkongers' personal safety even 1/1000th as much as they do national security?!

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said on Monday that it had inspected 376 single-block buildings with lifts installed by Taizoom and found 338 of them were missing smoke-seal components designed to keep fire and smoke from entering lift shafts.

It's the Norway story all over again.
Nearly 200 Chinese electric vehicles with cameras and communication systems have been driving into South Korean military facilities with no restrictions.
At least 190 connected cars. mostly BYD models capable of internet access are registered for regular entry at Army, Navy, and Air Force sites. That includes the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff compound, Air Force bases housing F-35s and KF-21s, the Navy Submarine Command, and the Busan Naval Operations Command where U.S. carriers dock.
These vehicles carry more than 10 cameras, high-precision GPS, radar, and microphones. U.S. and European officials have already flagged the risk that the data they collect can be transmitted to Chinese authorities in real time.
A military official noted the contradiction: iPhones are banned from bases for security reasons, while Chinese vehicles are not. The Ministry of National Defense acknowledged the vulnerability in April but has not banned the cars or required security protocols from manufacturers.
South Korea is allowing Chinese connected vehicles into the facilities that defend it. The surveillance capability is already inside the gate.
Nearly 200 Chinese electric vehicles equipped with cameras and communication devices have been freely entering and exiting South Korean military facilities, it was revealed on the 15th.
These vehicles have accessed the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff compound, Air Force bases housing stealth F-35s and supersonic KF-21s, and the Navy Submarine Command.
According to People Power Party Rep. Kang Dae-sik, at least 190 Chinese-made connected cars capable of internet access, such as BYD vehicles, are registered for regular entry across Army, Navy, and Air Force facilities.
Registrations cover sensitive installations including the Busan Naval Operations Command, where U.S. aircraft carriers dock, and the Jinhae Submarine Command.
Connected cars feature over 10 cameras, high-precision GPS, radar, and microphones, raising concerns in the U.S. and the European Union that gathered surveillance data could be transmitted to Chinese authorities in real time.
Chinese connected vehicles are also cleared for access at key Army installations, including Army Headquarters in Gyeryongdae, the Ground Operations Command, and the Special Warfare Command.
A military official pointed out the contradiction in current policy, remarking that it is absurd iPhones are banned from military facilities for security risks while no restrictions exist for Chinese vehicles.
The Ministry of National Defense has not implemented entry bans or requested security protocols from manufacturers, having acknowledged in April that video collection on bases poses vulnerabilities but only pledging in September to draft countermeasures.
Rep. Kang warned that the government's response remains inadequate, noting that relevant ministries have shifted responsibility among themselves without establishing a central authority to address the risk of real-time intelligence leaks to China.
