As ever with our Society Conferences, we particularly welcome proposals from early career researchers. There will also be a mentoring programme to help postgraduate and early career researchers develop their papers for publication.

***NEW SUBSTACK ARTICLE IS UP*** THE SECRET DRAWER: NEW YEAR'S CARD (1917) FROM BASIL THOMSON, THE FIRST WORLD WAR SPY-CATCHER 'The Secret Drawer' is a series of monthly posts that examines super cool spy stuff, such as gadgetry, special weapons, telephones, hats, artwork, letters, and top-secret reports. The list is endless. This rare New Year card is the perfect way to launch my obsession with spy objects, which I hope you will enjoy! If you would like to read more about Basil Thomson, seen sitting behind his desk at Scotland Yard, interrogating 'Fritz', a suspected German agent, please consider subscribing, free or paid, to 'The Spy Historian. You will also learn how I nearly fell off my chair when I discovered the card @mi_intel. It was all down to the presence of a young female shorthand writer who is seen taking notes...👀 #spyhistory #HERstory @substack This rare New Year card is the perfect way to launch my obsession with spy objects. I hope you enjoy it! open.substack.com/pub/claire…

On Halloween, I frequently reflect on the proliferation of ghost stories, myth, folklore, and spiritualism during the First World War. For many reasons - cultural trends, responses to trauma, or coping with crisis - individuals fell back on the spiritual and supernatural world.
