x402 catalysts are quietly intensifying
Cloudflare just announced x402-enabled agentic wallets/identity system (programmatic x402/stablecoin wallet for agents)
+ They also announced Monetization Gateway last month, enabling ~20% of the internet's websites to sell agents via x402
The COOLEST signal is that the x402 standard has expanded beyond CT
Linux Foundation became the x402 governing body in place of Coinbase, creating a much stronger neutrality/legitimacy
+ These developments are happening on top of AWS, Google, Stripe integrating their support for x402 settlement layer
x402 demand is still small BUT the standard has garnered lots of support from big tech
Infra is shipping way ahead of demand
BUT once demand shows up, it'll show up at scale
(similar to the stablecoin adoption)

Let me tell you a short story
I first learnt about Exa and tried it out through AgentCash x402
(For those who don't know, Exa is an agentic search tool that's so much faster/more structured than normal web search. AgentCash is one of the top discovery layer for x402 pay-per-use endpoints)
For users, the value prop is pretty simple — use hundreds of tools without spending hundreds of dollars or spending hours to sign up and grab API keys
For me, I tested out these tools every single week, and found Exa to be one of the good ones.
Interestingly, I stopped using Exa via x402 and decided to grab their API after a month.
Why?
The API gives lots of free credits/free searches every month. There's also Exa Monitors feature (that act as a radar to the things you care about) which is only available via API.
The point here is not about Exa but about the user funnel.
x402 serves as a trial-period → once users are happy, they move to API
Better discoverability than MCP through curated catalogues & marketplaces. Better ease of switching tools, providers and testing things out.
And that is why every builders & startups out there should integrate x402

The AI agent discovers the required service, the payment is verified and settled, the service executes the request, and the result is returned to the user
A standardized payment flow allows service providers to focus on what they build, rather than how they charge for it
