Brendan Valdes was preparing for his third season on the Korn Ferry Tour and had gotten engaged last Christmas. Then, on New Year’s Day, he began coughing up small amounts of blood. Initially thought to be bronchitis, further scans revealed a 9-centimeter mass pressing against his heart and lung. The 23-year-old will play this week’s Biltmore Championship on a sponsor exemption—his first Tour-sanctioned event since PGA TOUR Q-School in mid-December—who was deemed cancer-free in June.
