Last week, we hosted our annual Cetamura Day!
Since 1973, @FSUClassics and @FSUIP have led the excavations at Cetamura del Chianti — an archaeological site that has been home to ancient Etruscans, Romans, and Italians of the Middle Ages.

It's official! 🎉 @FloridaState has launched the FSU Humanities Center within @FSUartssciences, establishing an interdisciplinary hub to advance humanities research and expand the field’s visibility across the university and beyond.
“The Humanities Center reflects the legacy of FSU’s commitment to the advancement of the humanities,” said @PresMcCullough. “We are creating new opportunities for faculty, students, staff and the community to collaborate, pursue important research and further strengthen the humanities at FSU.”

Although @FloridaState's summer commencement festivities are over, we’re still celebrating our #FSU2026 grads!
Maxine Mandt crossed the stage on Friday evening to receive her bachelor’s degree in Latin through @FSUClassics.
“The courses I took at FSU were high-level and challenging, but the support from my professors made me feel confident in my abilities. Maximas gratias to the FSU Department of Classics and the professors who pushed me to be the best student I could be!”
Mandt will soon begin teaching Latin at St. John’s Classical Academy in Orange Park, Florida.

Ancient grape seeds, or 'pips,' unearthed from Italy's Cetamura del Chianti hilltop in Tuscany are revealing some surprising details about the region's winemaking history.
@FloridaState's Nancy de Grummond, the M. Lynette Thompson Professor of Classics in @FSUClassics, spoke to @EarthDotCom about the biggest takeaways from the new study, out now in the Journal of Archaeological Science: bit.ly/4vosXHM.

At nearly 3,000 years old, Homer's "The Odyssey" is one of the world's oldest surviving works of literature and continues to fascinate scholars and artists alike. 🏺
@FloridaState experts Virginia Lewis (left) and Stephen Sansom (right) are available for comment ahead of the July 17 release of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," a blockbuster film adaption of the epic Greek poem.
Lewis is an associate professor in @FSUClassics and specializes in Greek literature, with particular interests in Greek poetry and theories of space and place.
Assistant Professor Sansom, also in the FSU Department of Classics, specializes in early Greek poetry and its reception, especially epic and digital humanities.

Since 1973, @FSUClassics and @FSUIP have led the excavations at Cetamura del Chianti — an archaeological site that has, uniquely, been home to ancient Etruscans, Romans, and Italians of the Middle Ages.
Recently, @FSUClassics' Nancy de Grummond (top right) — who's served as the site's director since 1983 — was part of a research team that sequenced the DNA of 2,000-year-old grape seeds, mapping the most extensive genetic history of ancient grapevines recovered from a single archaeological site.

“Our team’s research adds an important chapter on the history of wine in the viticulture region of Chianti. What a delightful surprise to learn that the world-famous red wine of today was actually preceded by a white vintage that was curated and maintained for centuries in Etruscan and Roman times.”
A new study coauthored by @FSUClassics' Nancy de Grummond sequenced the DNA of 2,000-year-old grape seeds preserved in mud at the bottom of wells in Italy's Chianti wine region.
The research found that these seeds produced white grapes — a surprise considering Chianti's global fame for red wines.
