"Toxic fish factories." That's how Green Party leader Elizabeth May describes salmon farms operating in partnership with coastal BC First Nations. Divisive language from the leader of a party that claims to champion Indigenous rights and self-determination. 🧵
WATCH: In Question Period, @ElizabethMay demanded answers on the government’s delayed promise to shut down open-net pen salmon farms in B.C.: “Will this government commit to keep the promise and shut down these toxic fish factories by 2029?”

A few facts: 🐟 100% of salmon raised in BC is raised in partnership with the First Nation in whose territorial waters it spends its life. ✅ Each Nation sets own thresholds for environmental and fish health monitoring, sea lice, stocking and fallow periods; these thresholds are often more strict than federal regulations set by DFO. 🏡 The own-source revenues from salmon farming and related businesses help our communities build housing, promote language and culture, provide mental health and addiction services and much more.

As other BC First Nations pursue economic development in forestry, oil and gas, LNG and critical minerals, we stand in solidarity with them - we trust them to mitigate impacts to the wild salmon we all depend on. Trust us to do the same. Learn more: keepfoodaffordable.ca/#knowl…

The federal government is investing millions in First Nations-led hatcheries to produce more salmon while pursuing a policy that would dismantle another Indigenous-backed form of salmon production on the B.C. coast. #SalmonFarming #Hatchery #Wildsalmon seawestnews.com/the-hatchery…

"Eby and PM Mark Carney have rightly embraced Indigenous equity participation in major projects across Canada. First Nations are being invited to become owners and partners in pipelines, critical minerals, forestry and other natural-resource industries. That same principle must apply to salmon aquaculture...Our Nations should have the ability to choose the right technology, the right locations, and the right economic and environmental future for our communities." Canada needs policy decisions that are informed, proportionate and evidence‑based. Salmon farming contributes to domestic food production, coastal economies and year‑round supply. It also operates within a regulated framework that should be assessed on facts, not broad claims. Healthy debate is welcome. Mischaracterization is not a substitute for analysis. #Aquaculture #FoodSecurity #OceanEconomy #Seafood #PublicPolicy cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scot…

Salmon farming in rural and remote coastal communities is not an abstract policy debate. It is paycheques, small businesses, and young people deciding whether they can stay in their home communities. Sign the petition and tell Ottawa to protect it. keepfoodaffordable.ca/#actio…
