While most Floridians sleep, more than 30 million migrating birds can fly across the Sunshine State in a single night during peak Fall migration in late September and October.
This beautiful 1963 painting by Wallace Hughes shows a flock of Canada geese flying over a Florida sunset – a sight many Floridians have had the opportunity to witness over the years.
But Canada geese aren’t the only ones taking flight. More than 400 species of North American birds will migrate through or over Florida during the Fall migration period, which runs from July through late November. @America250FL

The Fort Myers Beach Council ordered staff to meet with La Ola Surfside Restaurant owner Tom Houghton and his attorney for mediation over a code violation regarding trailers on the property. The code violation has been in appeal in Lee County Circuit Court since last year.

Fort Myers Beach Manager Will McKannay has relieved Community Services Director Jeff Hauge and Community Development Director Frank Kropacek of their jobs, according to a short statement issued by the town. The two senior administrators were on administrative leave since August.
Lee County Commissioner Kevin Ruane is expecting layoffs and higher taxes if Amendment 3 passes Nov. 3 in a state referendum. Lee County commissioners recently heard projections for higher fees which would only cover a small portion of revenue lost:
