Nearly 60 journalists who recently landed positions in a new newsroom explained how to get a job right now. Most of them had the same advice: You need to network more.

A reminder to journalists to save all of your past work, and/or utilize Wayback Machine's web archive because one day, all of your written work over the last 7-8 years on a website could be just wiped away. 🙂↕️

New day, new X handle: @byMarkWoods
Created the old one in early days of Twitter, putting a “TU” in front of my name. Now that I’m no longer a Times-Union employee — cleaned out my desk the other day and unearthed all kinds of memories — figured it was time to change the handle.

This is so good. As a former small-town sports editor, what we did *mattered*. Saturday morning meant a game story - with quotes & reaction - and full boxscores from every game. Previews on Thursdays. Features, coverage of all sports. You knew what was going on in the area.

The cat is officially out of the bag… I’ll be retiring at the end of hurricane season.
I’ve been in front of the cameras in So Fl, 30+ years (21 at WSVN & 10 before that at Telemundo). As a whole, in the TV industry for 40 years ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2026/9…
To all of our loyal former @MiamiHerald and @HeraldSports readers, a quick public service announcement: I'm still here! Not retired. Still writing Dolphins, Canes, NFL picks -- everything. It'll be great to see you again, so find me now at: substack.com/@thegregcote

What a fabulous farewell column from a fabulous person. We say our goodbyes tomorrow to Michelle, @gregcote and @FernandezAndreC , and I will miss not only their work but their company and good humor... Sadly, our business is dying. (Two more bad things happened today in our 3-newspaper sports section cocoon, but it's not my place to say.) The three hedge funds-or-chains that own the three S. Florida newspapers haven't been able to make enough revenue (in their view) with a paywall in a world where anyone can ask AI for a summary of an article. I'd like to see a no-paywall approach, but the hedge funds/chains know more than I do and say it won't work. There will be a day when none of us - myself and 11 others who remain sportswriters for The Herald, Sentinel and Palm Beach Post - will be around. And while some fans are fine getting their information solely from aggregators, I hope everyone realizes there will be very little to aggregate when all 12 of us are invariably gone.
🚨✍️My final column for the Miami Herald...Thanks to all who have followed my work.
