What is happening in Arewa is heartbreaking, terrifying, and completely unacceptable. People are being kidnapped, tortured, killed, and held for ransom. Videos and reports of these horrific incidents are circulating everywhere online, yet it feels as though the suffering of ordinary citizens has become something we are expected to live with. How did we get to a point where people can no longer feel safe in their own communities, on the roads, or even inside their homes?
Let us be honest with ourselves: our leaders have failed woefully in their most fundamental responsibility, which is to protect the lives and property of the people they govern. This is not about politics, political parties, or who supports which government. It is about human lives, the safety of our families, and the future of our communities. No political affiliation should ever be more important than the lives of innocent Nigerians.
Today, people travelling from one place to another do so with the fear that they may never reach their destination. Families are terrified whenever their loved ones embark on a journey. Even those who remain in their homes are no longer certain that their homes offer them protection. When people begin to fear being abducted from their own neighbourhoods, we must acknowledge that something has gone terribly wrong.
Take Millennium City in Kaduna, for example. The growing fear of bandit attacks and kidnappings is becoming a serious concern for residents. People are reportedly beginning to consider leaving their homes because they no longer feel safe where they live. Imagine working hard to build a home, establish a business, raise your children, and create a future for your family, only to find yourself living in constant fear that you could be taken away for ransom at any moment. No one deserves to live like this.
The consequences extend far beyond the immediate victims of these attacks. Insecurity destroys livelihoods, disrupts education, weakens local businesses, discourages economic activity, and forces families to abandon the communities they have spent years building. It creates an environment where businesses struggle to survive, property loses value, and development becomes increasingly difficult. Most importantly, it destroys the peace of mind that every human being deserves.
No serious investor wants to invest in an environment where lives and property are constantly under threat. Investors need security, stability, and confidence that their businesses, employees, and investments will be protected. When insecurity drives residents away and discourages new businesses from entering a community, the economic consequences eventually affect the entire state. Development cannot thrive where people are afraid to live, work, travel, and conduct their daily activities.
This is why the security crisis in Arewa must not be treated as just another political talking point. It requires urgent attention, decisive action, accountability, and a genuine commitment to protecting the people. We cannot continue to normalise the loss of innocent lives, the payment of ransoms, the displacement of families, and the suffering of communities as though these things are an unavoidable part of life.
Leadership is not merely about occupying an office, making promises, attending events, or campaigning for the next election. Leadership comes with a responsibility to protect citizens, respond to their suffering, and create the conditions necessary for them to live with dignity and peace. When people cannot safely travel, sleep in their homes, or go about their daily lives, serious questions must be asked about the effectiveness of those entrusted with their security.

I promise you, there used to be a time…
The nation is poor and bleeding.
About ten years ago, once it’s November, you’d begin to smell Christmas on the streets, in the local shops, in churches, even in schools.
A lot has been stolen from us, basic things now feel like luxury.
