Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the fire and rescue service still feels the weight of that day. 343 FDNY firefighters were lost on 9/11, and in the years since, thousands more responders have faced long-term health effects from their service at Ground Zero. At FDIC International 2026, we marked the 25th anniversary with special tributes, education sessions, and moments of reflection — honoring those we lost, supporting those still affected, and reaffirming our promise to never forget.

When the call came, Stephen Siller turned around. He put on his gear, ran 1.7 miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and headed toward the World Trade Center. At the FDIC 2026 Opening Ceremony, Frank Siller shared this story about his brother, a testament to the bravery and dedication so many first responders showed on September 11, 2001. Tomorrow, on the 25th anniversary, we honor their courage, their sacrifice and their legacy.

At FDIC 2026, the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 was honored through remembrance, reflection, and recognition. The Opening Ceremony featured an FDIC-produced documentary, recognition of FDNY legacies and responders from Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Shanksville, and USAR operations, and a keynote from Frank Siller of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The ceremony also honored FDNY Lieutenant Andy Fredericks through the Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award and recognized Ray Downey’s legacy with the announcement of the Ray Downey Scholarship. 25 years later, we remember. We honor. We never forget.

The fire service has always shared a bond that is difficult to put into words. On September 11, 2001, and in the days and weeks that followed, that bond reached another level. At FDIC International 2026, the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb brought the fire service together to climb 110 stories in honor of those who never made it home.
