Is it COVID-19 or seasonal influenza? Zimbabwe is currently recording nearly 12,000 influenza cases every week as the country experiences a seasonal surge in respiratory illnesses. But health authorities have moved to calm fears of a COVID-19 resurgence. The Ministry of Health says 302 COVID-19 tests conducted where testing was indicated have all returned negative, while the country has retained the capacity to test suspected cases at the National Reference Laboratory. The increase in cases comes weeks after more than 300 students at St Faith’s High School were reportedly affected by a respiratory illness within a week, raising public concern. So, what is driving the current wave of illness, who is most at risk, and what should you do if you develop flu-like symptoms? A nation cannot remain silent while women die giving life. The reported deaths of 563 women from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications and 6,177 newborns in Zimbabwe during 2025 are not just statistics. Behind every number is a mother, a child, a family, and a community forever changed. At The Girls Table, we believe that every woman has the right to access safe, dignified and quality maternal healthcare. No woman should lose her life because of preventable complications, delayed care, inadequate resources, or barriers within the health system. Maternal and newborn health is not only a health issue; it is a matter of human rights, gender equality and sustainable development. Zimbabwe’s commitments under Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and the Abuja Declaration on health financing require urgent action, investment and accountability. We call for strengthened healthcare systems, improved access to skilled maternal care, adequate resources for health facilities, stronger referral systems, and transparent accountability mechanisms to ensure that every maternal and newborn death informs action to save lives. #HerVoice
