In 1991 Typhoon Yuri passed south of Guam. Jim Leonard went to the Inarajan Natural Pool on the east side to catch the storm surge. He timed it just right youtu.be/l9vDSWugz08?is=t9Ya… Jim would be proud to see chasers going there today.

Guam is literally dodging a bullet as #Champi passes just south of the island. This is one of the nastiest inner-cores of a tropical cyclone I’ve ever seen on radar. Several meso-vorticies and tons of lightning in the eyewall tells me this is a very intense storm.

Satellite shows Super Typhoon Champi with intensity at 135 - 155 knots, likely Category 5 as it bears Guam. Champi explosively intensified, and may become the strongest tropical cyclone on Earth so far for 2026.
JTWC #12 Typhoon Champi expected to traverse just south of Guam as a Super Typhoon 150mph. Expect typhoon conditions over the entire Island. Starlink equipped chasers are on Guam. Images; JTWC, & @RadarOmega @zoom_earth pro.

Typhoon Champi is explosively intensifying on its approach to Guam. An eye is forming.
This could be Category 5 very quickly.

Tropical Storm #Champi is organizing steadily this morning. Vortical hot towers are beginning to wrap cyclonically around the center, and the stretching of these vortex tubes concentrates the surrounding low-level vorticity, building the core.
The environment should get increasingly favorable on approach to the marianas, where rapid intensification into a powerful super typhoon is likely.
