When the postmortem on Nike is written, people will reference today as the epitome of the company's failure. You sign the most marketable athlete in the world, wait 3+ years to release a signature shoe, and then completely fail to meet demand. $250B to $50B valuation in 5 yrs 📉
Nike’s Caitlin 1s, the first signature sneaker for Indiana Fever basketball star Caitlin Clark, have nearly sold out less than two hours after their highly anticipated U.S. release. Nike released the Caitlin 1 at 10 a.m. ET on Nike.com. About an hour later, only extra-large sizes above size 15 remained. It’s unclear how much inventory Nike made available. More: cnb.cx/3VnmAbi

Pay for play
Head of the White House World Cup task force, Andrew Giuliani, says the U.S. wanted things to be fair on the pitch "especially when you consider all the federal dollars we laid out for this" when discussing Balogun's suspended suspension. “We did that. You had that red card, which never should have been administered, reversed. And we stand by the actions that we took.” thetimes.com/us/american-pol…

FIFA's host city contracts are some of the most lopsided agreements I've ever seen. Host cities are spending hundreds of millions and giving tax breaks, yet FIFA keeps nearly all revenue — media rights, tickets, sponsorships, concessions, parking. READ: huddleup.substack.com/p/the-…

Before the tournament began, it was popular to question whether FIFA might accomplish the unthinkable: putting on a World Cup that sucks. Well, never mind. Here’s my prediction-of-doom scorecard nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

Were headed for a transit debacle ahead of the Argentina v Algeria match in KC. The plan by ConnectKC2026 to bus people from downtown to Arrowhead is poorly conceived. There’s 20,000+ fans expecting busing and they’re not loading fast enough. Thousands are going to miss kickoff.

Things what happens when you have a stadium infrastructure designed for suburban American life. And you welcome the world who relies on, expects, and is literally told to use public transportation.

It wasn’t just me
Absolute s**tshow here in KC. I myself sat in a shuttle on a service road before just getting out in the middle of the road and walking a mile and a half to the stadium. Left my hotel downtown around 345, arrived at Arrowhead around 7. Bet it’s never like this for an NFL game.

Raytown busses were so late people were walking to the Stadium! Fans were calling it Fyrefest.

If you are in the KC metro area and can get to Arrowhead in the next two hours, you can get in the door to see Messi for $69.

Expanded pitch sizes in stadiums designed for American Football has led to thousands of seats with obstructed views Most 300-level seats in ATL stadium can’t see the sideline. These Cat. 3 seats were still $300+ No Spain isn’t playing with 10 men…just how it looks during a CK!

Just wait until World Cup 2038 - very likely hosted once again in the U.S. - features 68 teams and 128 matches.
On the face of it, Germany's 7-1 win against Curacao was the sort of result that those opposed to the expanded World Cup format have been warning us about. With 48 teams comes an inevitable dilution of quality, the argument goes, and with that will come more uncompetitive games, more thrashings like this. But if that is the price for moments like Curacao’s goal, it is one we should all live with. It’s not that it doesn’t matter they then went on to lose heavily but it’s only half the point of the game. The rest is the joy. 📝 @NickMiller79 FREE TO READ 🔗 nyti.ms/43xmkYb

I spent months reporting how the World Cup came to North America. It’s a 16-year saga that ran through boozy hotel bars in Zurich, Hawaii and Aruba; four U.S. presidents; DOJ raids; and a global lobbying campaign. Read it here in @POLITICOMag: politico.com/news/magazine/2…
