Build-to-rent communities will now be eligible for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) financing, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said in a statement on Wednesday.
These communities include manufactured homes and multifamily properties made up of family homes, duplexes, and triplexes.
This credit expansion is expected to boost the availability of rental homes in the United States.
“America needs more affordable housing,” HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in the statement. “We’re eliminating barriers to spur development, expand rental options, and improve housing affordability for hardworking American families.”
Backdrop
Rents have climbed sharply since the pandemic.
The average asking rent for a typical U.S. home reached $1,948 in August, up 2.5% from a year earlier, according to Zillow. Overall, rents are 38.5% higher than before the pandemic, and single-family rents have risen 47%.
Last year, 20% of working-age renters missed or delayed a full payment, up from 16.5% the year before.

I’m big on asking who benefits. Motive matters. But there’s something deeply inorganic about this response. Dozens of people parroting the same question, “Why would they fake it?” with zero interest in examining the discrepancies.
