Imagine if we had a salary cap man. Something interesting could be brewing in Pittsburgh
Hard choice fellas. Would you rather have slightly higher picks or Aaron Judge, Max fried, Cody Bellinger, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon?
I see a lot of cap talk on my feed lately and I never see anyone mention the fact that if the league does set a cap, I'd assume the penalties on drafting will also even out as well.
Below is how the Yankees draft capital has compared with Pirates over the decade. Significantly fewer/less:
- Draft pool money
- Top 100/150 picks in the draft
- IFA money
Smaller market fans always complain (although it is very untrue as of late) how big market teams like the Yankees/Dodgers/Mets can't develop their own guys and solely rely on stealing other teams' players.
Not only is this obviously untrue through the last 3 years for those 3 teams, big market clubs draft with SIGNIFICANTLY less draft capital/IFA money and have to almost be perfect in their development + draft to really get value out of their system. I would assume given a cap and the equal opportunity for all owners to compete that these draft penalties are weakened a significant bit.
I say this as someone whose best friend lives in Pittsburgh and knows how much those fans are dying for good baseball and has wanted to see that market succeed for a while. I've long thought the Pirates/Reds/Rockies/etc... baseball operations were more problematic than their payrolls (which are obviously also extremely problematic). Very poor drafting and development + a lot of surplus value lost in trades, I've felt, has been the bigger plague in most of these systems.
Floor with no cap would kill every small market team

Their also ignoring the salary floor of it all. A salary floor is even more important than a salary cap and THAT is pro worker
Insanely off putting thing to say to fans of small market teams.
“You actually want your team to be on similar footing to my team? You must be a paid shill!”

Must be nice to have the ability to have poor management but still get playoff appearances through spending!
If a salary cap was put into place, it would become a lot less acceptable for ownerships like the pirates and reds. But nah, let’s just leave them in the cellar forever!
Do Yankees fans not realize their team is a bunch of losers? Without a $300M payroll they’d win 75 games every year

@RealMichaelKay the NYY need to 🛑 signing/trading for players form LOSING organizations!!
Especially players who have ZERO playoff experience
Ryan. Colorado. Losers.
Jazz. Marlins. Losers.
Ramos and Jose came from LOSERS as well!!
Brandon Lowe is the man. SB
Jeffers must platoon with Wells.
Jojo Romero in BP. Lock up Bednar and Blackburn.
People say caps don’t work because teams in Kansas City, Ft Lauderdale, Oklahoma City and San Antonio are able to produce good teams consistently

The power surge continues for Carter Johnson!
After hitting 14 of his 18 career homers this MiLB season, the @Marlins prospect tacks on his first of the Fall. Johnson’s homer travels 429 feet (105.3 MPH) and extends the Glendale lead.
