The promised bus revolution could be stuck behind parked cars in Exeter. Along with disabled , elderly & young people tying to get to the shops, college & hospital There are better ways to solve this if Councillors choose to ask the community 👇
Replying to @ExeterStreets
@ExeterStreets volunteers used publicly available data to analyse the speed of 800 buses on Heavitree Fore St. 🧵

The 2nd most populous city in Italy hosted a pilot project using e-cargo bikes instead of vans, and found the companies reduced delivery times 23% and reduced operating costs 40%. Not bad, huh.

It’s not the scrapes, bumps and bruises from risky play that most parents are concerned about. It’s the very real danger of being hit and killed by a car. That’s what’s stopping children from having the freedom, adventure and free play they once had (and still need).
Before the 1990s, kids experienced more risk, more thrills, more physical injuries, and fewer psychological injuries than they do today. Kids had more freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. We have forgotten that kids are antifragile.

Sigh. We presume they do know how buses work but just don't care. Great comfort to elderly person, waiting for delayed outbound 4 bus at Waitrose to get home to Heavitree after hospital, that bus was 'empty' for part of inbound journey Petition 👇 democracy.devon.gov.uk/mgEPe…

1/ Opponent of better bus lanes has found issues that better bus lanes, better enforced will solve We knew that- DCC found 181 bus lane contraventions in just 4 days! We look forward to @stuarthughes747 getting those ANPR powers 👍 How are these nothing to do with traffic?

2/ Would be *really* interesting to see how many & when critical deliveries were made that require bus lane access to shop front. That would cast light on the cost/benefits & best way to fix. There are plenty of solutions to be found within a better bus lane, better enforced

1/ Yet more data released on the Exeter Active Streets Trial. This time by South West Ambulance Trust. They have shared data comparing ambulance response times during the Trial (Aug 23- June 24) vs same months pre Trial (Aug 22-June 23).

Sports minister @Steph_Peacock "Kids, take inspiration from Olympic & Paralympic athletes & be more active!" Why restrict activity to sports? Safe streets around homes & schools would enable kids to walk or cycle instead of being confined in cars... standard.co.uk/news/politics…

You can also sign the petition in favour of the changes. It takes a couple of minutes and will really help to show councillors that the plan to improve public transport has support. democracy.devon.gov.uk/mgEPe…

– Faster and more reliable buses encourage people out of their cars and reduce congestion and pollution. - Positive effect on emergency vehicle response times. - Gives a cheaper option than driving, and favours those who can't afford to run a car, during a cost-of-living crisis

1/ These aren't just numbers. They have real world consequence. 'FOUR times so far this term I've stopped to let kids across the crossing place at drop off time (at St Michaels school), just to have the car behind me overtake *while kids are on the crossing*.
1/ We wrote this thread in early September with our estimate of what traffic levels would welcome kids back to primary schools in Heavitree & Whipton. Devon County Council data now out We did pretty well.....

2/ 'I've noticed that people are getting frustrated with traffic on Hamlin Ln. The mini gridlock that forms by the park at busy times has reappeared. The car behind me overtook when I stopped for at the crossing & the one behind it did as well' More danger outside a school

9/ ✅ Walking & wheeling up ✅ Cycling up 🍾 Every success criteria met 🍾 There were issues to address & ways to do that. We were angry when the Trial was suspended. But the period of reflection has allowed time away from protest & anger for the real picture to emerge.
