They're doing it because they want to destroy it. As they do to everything beautiful our ancestors created. The reason is obvious: Most of the things in the Western Canon are antithetical to the degenerate, nihilistic, girl-boss culture we live in today. But they can't get rid of all these classics; they have too much significance, and there's a risk people may return to them and inoculate themselves. So they have to invert and distort their stories and characters so that the books' messages are aligned with their corrupted intentions for humanity. They know most people are illiterate and will never read the books - and that even if they do, the film is "stickier" to the brain, so the movie's false expression will eventually take over their interpreted meaning. This wasn't always the case. Originally, Hollywood's mission wasn't to change, but to bring these classics to life. But gradually, Hollywood stopped being storytellers and started becoming propagandists. You could see this shift in full swing by the 2010s; by mid-decade, as woke normalized "deconstruction," the industry became more or less a slop-factory. The last film that really came close to being authentic to the book was LOTR. But even that one - which is almost as good as an adaptation can get - had subtle distortions which undermined Tolkein's intentions for character development (such as Aragorn's self-doubt, which never happened in the book, & the amplification of Arwen's role). I haven't seen one film even remotely true to original texts or intention since then. That's why I basically refuse to watch film anymore (with few exceptions). The industry's goal isn't art; it's cultural genocide and brain-rot, and I refuse to support it.
