There is something deeply disturbing about the fact that the man entrusted with Britain’s national security is married to a journalist who has publicly questioned the testimony of Israeli rape victims, pooh-poohed solidarity with Israel the day after October 7 and apparently supported a proscribed terror group. Jonathan Powell, Keir Starmer’s national security adviser, occupies one of the most sensitive positions in government. He is privy to Britain’s deepest intelligence secrets, helps shape our response to terrorism and advises the prime minister on matters of war and peace. His wife, Sarah Helm, is entitled to her own political opinions, however grotesque. But her social media posts cannot be dismissed as a family matter. Astonishingly, just as those questions are coming under scrutiny, Helm has chosen to wade into another highly sensitive controversy about British tradition, Gaza subversion and antisemitism.
