Look down at your feet while walking anywhere in Japan: At the crosswalk. On the subway stairs. Down an underground shopping mall. Along a quiet residential sidewalk in the countryside. You will see a continuous, bright yellow path of raised tiles. Some have parallel ridges (walk forward). Some have rounded bumps (stop and caution). They are Tenji Blocks — tactile paving for the blind. In 1965, a Japanese inventor named Seiichi Miyake was walking near an intersection. He saw a visually impaired man with a white cane almost get struck by a car. The man was terrified, tapping the concrete blindly. Miyake was not a government official. He was not a billionaire. He spent his own life savings to invent a concrete tile that a cane and a shoe sole could instantly read. In 1967, the world's very first tactile paving was laid in Okayama City. Today, Japan has laid over one hundred thousand miles of continuous yellow paths. A blind teenager can step out of their front door in a small town, follow the yellow ridges to the train station, transfer through Tokyo Station without asking for help, and arrive at university with complete dignity and independence. Many tourists think Japan’s greatest achievement is bullet trains or neon towers. They are wrong. The measure of a truly great civilization isn't how high its skyscrapers reach. It is how far its sidewalk will stretch to protect someone who cannot see.
