There is a clear, yet never discussed omission in the cries over PlayStation ending physical media. And it also reveals how self-centered these players are – even as they claim Sony to be some hive minded capitalist evil.
As is now well known, when a physical game is sold both the publisher and platform receive less than when a digital entitlement is sold.
At the same time, the players spend the same – and as they say, players actually get more than when buying digital.
Where is the “missing” money? It’s spent on manufacturing a disc, shipping a disk, managing costly returns, defective disks, stolen disks, etc. And that’s before accounting for grey market sales.
What happens normally when a version of the same product is less profitable than an otherwise identical good? It is sold for more.
What happens normally when a version caters to a hyper-passionate niche? It is sold for more.
What happens when a version – again, to the claims of its ardent buyers – has more value than the (allegedly) inferior alternative? It is sold for more.
This is point number one. The very players who are offended by the loss of an option that they, a self-professedly valuable customer group that is actually marginal on the whole… refuse to actually pay for their preference.
In fact, they expect everyone else to pay for that preference.
Gamers will whine saying “it’s good business to practice to do well by your fans.” Sure.
But it’s not “good business” to monetize your most passionate players the least, divert profits to disk makers and retailers not gamemakers or platform subsidizers, let alone offer the “best” version of your product at the worst economics.
If Sony were the capitalist evil physical media fans claim it to be… well, there’s an easy answer!
If Sony could make as much, or more money from those goods, well then by definition… they would do so!
If these customers were, in fact, as valuable as they profess… Sony wouldn’t do this. But these players are in fact Sony's lease valuable customers. And those who purchase a physical disc via resale aren't even Sony's customers.
If these customers valued physical as much as they profess… they would pay more! The issue is players want their cake and to eat it to. They refuse to put their wallets where their mouth is. Instead, they want Sony to pick-up the check.
And it’s not just Sony. Small studios don't do physical because it is expensive. Even CDPR has to PAY publishers like WB to make and distribute physical discs on their behalf, meaning their margins are even worse than those of Sony or WB with their own games. But again, players just want to say – "deal with it!" Indefinitely!
And that’s the problem .
There is a global omni-industry (and omni-consumer) abandonment of physical media. Games used to be a tiny fraction of a very large global disk manufacturing and global disk drive manufacturing business.
It’s all going away.
That means games hold more and more and more of the cost burden.
Sony didn’t abandon Blu-Ray (a format they pioneered) in 2024 to screw gamers, they abandoned it because not enough people bought Blu-Rays.
And that same dynamic means ALL the factories that built Blu-Ray drives and Blu-Ray risks sit mostly unused, costlier per unit than ever.
But gamers? Again, unwilling to cover their share. Happy to receive the subsidy of the global supply chain of the 2000s and 2010s, but now that it disagrees with them, they still refuse to pick up the tab. What narcissism.
Do you want to be pro dev? Then tell Sony you will cover the extra costs of physical in your own pocket. If you're unwilling to do this, you're selfish, demanding the rest of us cover the cost of your hobby.
Sony CFO Lin Tao says they will not change their plans to end physical disc production and will cautiously move forward with the plan!
"There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing, that’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalization is progressing.
And so when we think about the future–and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this–and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward. And to this decision, we have received various opinions and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us.
Games are loved by many people. It’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases. And so we understand those emotions. We want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore."

With @AOC 's rabble rousing stupidity on full display this past week, it's time for a Saturday morning rant:
Our nation is doomed unless young people wake up and start thinking for themselves...
It doesn't take much brainpower to realize that "Do Nothing" politicians seek power by tapping into the primal emotion of JEALOUSY. They use the age old tactic of SCAPEGOATING a group, (usually the rich, the Jews or both) by BLAMING them for the circumstances that people find themselves in.
As the brilliant @ThomasSowell says “There are few talents more richly rewarded with both wealth and power, in countries around the world, than the ability to convince backward people that their problems are caused by other people who are more advanced.”
At the core of their argument, however, is a central LIE:
Wealth exists naturally, and can be divided by those in power, however they see fit.
It is almost unfathomable how WRONG that concept is.
Wealth does not exist in a vacuum, but is created by the EFFORT of people. That effort can be aided by access to natural resources, for sure, BUT, without ideas, effort, and risk taking by entrepreneurs, it would not exist.
Once one understands that, and further understand that when politicians can gain power by blaming the successful people that actually create wealth, society will start to unravel.
The ultimate irony is the world has just seen multiple examples of this. Whether it is the comparison of North and South Korea, the 100 million people KILLED by Socialist forced redistribution last century, or the adoption of free market principals by the Nordic countries to re-invigorate their economies after their socialist experiments, it is clear that free markets perform MUCH BETTER than planned ones.
YET, on college campuses, 57% of STUDENTS favor Socialism...
That is a crushing indictment of our educational system for sure, but it brings to mind another Sowell quote:
“Socialism is a wonderful idea. It is only as a reality that it has been disastrous. Among people of every race, color, and creed, all around the world, socialism has led to hunger in countries that used to have surplus food to export…. Nevertheless, for many of those who deal primarily in ideas, socialism remains an attractive idea — in fact, seductive. Its every failure is explained away as due to the inadequacies of particular leaders.”
This brings me back to my central point:
Young people NEED to start thinking critically.
Rather than accepting platitudes like "embracing the warmth of collectivism", to grant power to leaders that will lead the country to ruin, OR lining up behind jingoistic leaders that BLAME OTHERS for their problems, it is past time to remember what DID make America great.
FREEDOM.
While America has NEVER been perfect, it was always THE country where "opportunity" was more than a buzzword.
This means LESS state control over the economy, not more.
This will ultimately mean severing the link between MONEY and STATE, but, before that can be accomplished, it requires LESS REGULATION & LESS SPENDING on bureaucracy.
The country can not succeed when the RICHEST area in America is filled with the POLITICAL CLASS, as it is today.
The country can not succeed when "public servants" become wealthy from their "service", particularly when they do so by accepting donations from the largest corporations lobbyists and "non profits" who are used as a weapon to stop competition. The CRONYISM in D.C. and various state capitals has suffocated much of America's entrepreneurial spirit and is a major reason for the "K shaped economy" where the rich get richer and wage earners cant keep up.
SO, what is needed?
MONEY, must be removed from Politics. Donations should STRICTLY be for "speech" not "piggy banks" for politicians. "Non Profits" must be REMOVED from politics and paying politicians entirely.
Political Power must be cut. TERM LIMITS and ETHICS rules for ALL investing are essential.
REGULATION, particularly rules that create government sponsored MONOPOLIES must be cut. (The largest companies in Insurance, Healthcare, Pharma, Agriculture, Food processing, Banking and other industries ALL benefit from these rules)
PUBLIC WELFARE must be prioritized, to ensure OPPORTUNITY is expanded. Education and Healthcare costs must be brought down by competition, accountability and those who NEED help should get it. The FOOD SUPPLY must be cleaned of the POISONS we let in and medical innovation must be re-invigorated.
BUT, ALL of these things require LESS political power over our economy, not more. Cronyism must be eliminated and the government should get back to first principles:
- Stop monopolies & corporate abuses (instead of creating them)
- Ensure equality of opportunity for ALL (instead of picking winners and losers)
- Protect Americans from lawlessness and threats foreign and domestic (instead of nation building abroad or sanctuary state policies domestically)
