I’ve been compiling all the candidate answers to the Richmond News surveys. It’s remarkable how many platforms are simply ‘magic’ What do you mean you’ll hire more police, build more rec facilities, more arts funding, more free events AND lower taxes? You want to reduce congestion, but not build any new active transport infrastructure? $694 million operating budget. $180 million of that is community safety (mostly police contracts with y/y raises you aren’t stopping), another $180 million is utilities (set mostly by metro and with rate increases coming). Etcetera… Our residential property taxes are already kept artificially low by developer fees and commercial properties taking an oversized share of the burden. So just, be honest. Look for a few million dollar efficiencies where you can, cut out unnecessary red tape. Tell people exactly what percent of the city workforce you’ll cut and from which departments. But you’re not freezing the budget without significantly shifting the burden to future generations. I would actually argue that’s already happened, we are the future generation screwed over by decades of not properly funding our cities to build the infrastructure we need. I want to vote for candidates who want to be part of the solution. Who have a vision for a city that will be a magnet for young families. That allow seniors to age with independence and dignity. That have the housing where teachers, nurses, services workers and the like can live in the communities where they work. /end rant

End of an era. After a decade calling this place home it’s time for a little more space. I’ve absolutely loved living, training and growing here. If you or anyone you know is looking for a spacious 1 bedroom surrounded by greenery you won’t regret this one, I know I sure haven’t.

I’d love to be able to complain about taxes. But for that I’d need some money. So if you’re looking for a motivational speaker, reach out! Some people say I talk good.

Nice to see a candidate for council actually out in the community chatting to residents, as opposed to Advance Richmond flaunting election rules by putting up a bunch of flags and then leaving.

Lots of fun trying to get off the ground (my knee drive still leaves a lot to be desired). Have maybe run 100km total in the last 2 years, none of it really under 4:00/km, so I was quite pleased with this. Great job as always to @BC_Athletics and the whole @whistler50relay team for always putting on an outstanding event.

Dear Athletics Integrity Unit, I’d like to report age doping. No way is Mayor Mamdani still eligible as a U20 competitor.
🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine. “In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.” “Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.” Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right. “If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

Theres a Cole Hocker 1497m specialist joke for the making in there
Fun fact: the reason the difference between 1-2 and all the other lanes is less is because lane 1 is measured 30cm from the rail and all other lanes are measured 20cm from the lane line. This also means that it is theoretically possible to do less than 400m/ lap. If you can go 14cm off the rail instead of 30, you’re doing 399m per lap.

Go wide and run longer. Great illustration

September 13, 2025 I achieved my childhood dream of becoming the best in the world at this silly little thing I do. 33k into the 35k race, after grinding my way into the lead, I tore the tendon of one of my hamstring muscles off the bone at the hip. Those last two kilometres were the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Every step was a battle of will to get a little bit closer to the finish line. 1 year on and it’s the learning that I am so much stronger, tougher and determined than I’ve ever allowed myself to believe I am that stands out way more than the victory. It still hurts, I’m still not back to 100% but I am excited to get on more start lines in 2027 looking towards my 8th World Championship and hopefully qualifying for my 4th Olympic Games. Now hopefully I can do it with a few more sponsors by my side so the next podium I stand on I don’t have to do it barefoot!

I know an abstention is a vote in favour, but I still find this funny.

This is great from @alexaloo. And it’s nice to see a candidate give specific metrics they can be measured against versus vague disingenuous platitudes to ‘do more, better, and for cheaper’. IMO we are doing a good job striving for greater accessibility in our playgrounds whether in surface materials, structure elements, or play features. But in tandem we have to look at the research on world class playground design and make sure our playgrounds have enough controlled risk to be engaging and fun for kids to actually use. No point spending money on a new playground if no kids will ever actually play on it. @JDinRichmondBC is running for council as an independent and is someone who understands our playgrounds better than anyone having reviewed pretty much every one in Richmond with his own family. If you care about Richmond being an attractive place to call home for young families, then you should care about playgrounds.

Raced an indoor 2 mile this morning in Rochester. Really fun race organized ahead of friend’s wedding tomorrow. Went 12:00.7 and could have broken 12 if I hadn’t forgotten my bicarb back in Vancouver 😂 Hamstring felt the best it has all year, really happy with it overall, my 3 fastest kilometers all year back to back to back.

3 things here. 1) I personally believe that the 25-50 individuals who would get the opportunity to live in a secured rental at a price they can afford actually serve the community quite a bit. 2) the two bedroom units are probably just as likely to be rented out to roommates rather than families. I suspect that if the 2 bedroom units were at 40% there would be complaints that they’re too small for families to live in, which I am honestly more sympathetic towards. Devs design for roommates because they can pay higher rents. Why not look at policy to incentivize family units by prioritizing 2 bed 1 bath units with a larger living space.

3) Tomsett is the most over capacity school in Richmond, and policy has historically prevented ‘family friendly’ more affordable types of housing in so many of these under capacity school neighbourhoods. And then the empty nesters in their detached homes have complained to the city about increases in traffic on their street during school pick up and drop off because more and more kids are forced out of catchment where they can’t walk to school. I don’t rant as much about city politics stuff because generally the city is doing good things (30km/hr speed limits on all local streets is awesome policy and deserves a ton of credit). But with the election period looming I’ll be looking for candidates who have a deep understanding for the actual policies that govern how things work and have tangible and specific actions they’d take to implement change. And most importantly how different policies interact at 2nd and 3rd order effects. No vague promises of ‘making things better’ or ‘improving transparency’.

I use this cross walk several times a week. And I’d say 10% of the time I have to avoid getting hit by a reckless driver turning. Darryl and I lived a block apart and he always gave so much back to his community. I was so happy to have him come out to our KidSport Richmond gala last year as an athlete ambassador. You are going to be so missed by so many. I yearn for the day that manslaughter is called manslaughter even when it’s done by a driver to a vulnerable road user. Fuck this passive voice nonsense.
