Completely agree with this approach to AN treatment.
Replying to @AnorexiaMyths
It can help some families to think of the early stages of AN treatment to something like chemotherapy (where the side effects can make someone feel worse than the disease itself) or painful physical therapy that is the only way for someone to regain function after injury/surgery.

Proud supervisor 🥰
We are delighted to announce the 2025 recipients awardees of the @Alfred_Research Alliance Honours Scholarships. 🥁Kurea Adrian (Psychiatry) is researching how #ADHD influences #EatingDisorders. She's supervised by Dr @EvaGregertsen and Dr Romi Goldschlager.  🥁 and Joshua Lay (#InfectiousDiseases), supervised by Dr Nenad Macesic and Dr Ben Vezina.  Joshua is looking into clinical reservoirs and antimicrobial resistance of Serratia marcescens. These scholarships are awarded to our highest achieving Honours students. Both Kurea and Joshua are enrolled in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) degree. We wish them all the best in their studies! If you're interested in doing an Honours (BMedSc, BSc or BBiomedSc) year with @MonashSTM (or a Masters or PhD), save the date: Thu 7 August for our annual event at The Alfred Innovation and Education Hub, with @Monash_SPHPM, @BakerResearchAu and @BurnetInstitute. And for the 1% who DO access it, current treatments are only effective about 50% of the time... #EatingDisorders #EatingDisordersAwarenessWeek #EatingDisorderTreatment #EatingDisordersResearch
It's #eatingdisordersawarenessweek. Latest figures from NHS Digital indicate around ONE PERCENT of adults in the UK who need treatment currently access it. Where is the campaign saying "anyone can get an eating disorder, but 99% of adults can't get specialist help?" #edaw2025

I'm not engaging much with eating disorders awareness week this year. The way I want to raise awareness is to raise the alarms, raise a storm, raise a riot of public outrage about the immense injustices that silently ruin lives.

✨#HappyNewYear from snowy Norway!✨ I’ve been grateful to spend the holidays with family, but I know this time of year can be especially difficult for those affected by #EatingDisorders. In 2025, let’s work towards better treatments, greater understanding, and renewed hope. 💙

If you withdraw treatment from a patient with AN because it makes them anxious, do you understand AN at all?

We are currently investigating the effects of #ZINC on symptoms of #AnorexiaNervosa (including atypical & in partial remission). If you or a loved one is interested in participating in our Melbourne-based #ClinicalTrial, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. @MonashUni
The second time in 2 weeks that zinc has come up. Funnily enough, it was one of the first things I read about when AN struck and I was looking for answers. Think Zinc: Micronutrient Supplementation for the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa psychiatrictimes.com/view/th…

Mean age of death was 24.5 years old. A loss of 60 years of life. We can and should do better.
The highest SMR I have seen in the literature. People needing hospitalisation are the highest risk group. All except one patient who lost their lives had partial weight restoration during admission. Nutritional rehabilitation is an essential component of successful outcomes.

This is why our current hormone & medication trials include atypical #anorexia & those with AN who have managed to weight restore. BMI is not a good indicator of severity which I'm reminded of every single day seeing incredibly unwell people who are technically a "healthy weight"
Replying to @valeriezwong
In a residential sample of n = 1810, patients with atypical AN endorsed more severe eating disorder and emotional symptoms than patients with AN-R (no diff between atyp AN and AN-BP). The higher BMI of individuals with atypical AN accounted for these differences.

I’m sure when my daughter was ill she felt that her ED was a huge part of her identity and she didn’t know who she’d be without it. This is so common. But I can tell you: the fact that she had an ED is probably the least interesting thing about her.
