The emergence and rapid development of AI compel us to take a deeper look at the issues surrounding human-machine communication. Elon Musk has long been considering this matter, raising the problem and striving to solve it. Interviewer: So, you know, you once listed five areas you care about most: sustainable energy, space, and also the internet, AI, and gene editing. Looking ahead another ten years, are there any new frontiers you want to add to that list? Elon Musk: Well, I think biological enhancement, with, like, Neuralink, this company I created with some other people, where we want to try to solve the bandwidth constraint that humans have. So you can imagine, even in the most benign scenario where the AI is super friendly and wants to do everything it can, it wants to make you happy, just our rate of communication is too slow. So the peak human bandwidth is only about 100 bits per second, roughly. And our input bandwidth is much higher because of vision. So there we maybe have, it's a debatable point, but a megabit per second or a few megabits per second from our eyes, which are effectively like cameras. But our output bandwidth is really low, maybe 100 bits per second, whereas computers are communicating at a trillion bits per second. So anything we can do to increase the communication speed of humans will improve, I think, the alignment of humans and machines. Because otherwise, to an AI that is communicating at a terabit per second, talking to a human will be like talking to a tree.

Elon Musk on the SpaceX breakthrough Starship will provide: “The fundamental breakthrough we're aiming for at SpaceX is a fully and rapidly reusable orbital rocket, where both stages are fully and rapidly reusable. With our Falcon rocket, we are able to reuse the main stage and the nose cone, but we're not able to reuse the upper stage. And it still takes us at least a few days from when the main stage lands to when we can fly it again. So it isn't fully reusable because we lose the upper stage, which costs $10 million to build. And then the main stage, it's not as reusable as an aircraft; you can't just like refuel it and fly, it requires work for a couple of days. But the Starship design is the first design that is capable of full and rapid reusability.” --@elonmusk

Space will become the cheapest place for hosting AI data centers, and SpaceX is already actively working on this. Elon Musk is a visionary who takes on complex problems and simply solves them. “The lowest-cost place to put AI will be space. I think the case is a no-brainer for building AI, solar-powered AI data centers in space because, as you mentioned, it's also very cold in space. If you're in the shadow, then it's very cold in space, just 3 degrees Kelvin. So you just have your solar panels facing the Sun and then a radiator that's like pointed away from the Sun, so it has no Sun incidence and then it's just cooling. It's a very efficient cooling system. So the net effect is that the lowest cost place to put AI will be space and that'll be true within two years, maybe three, three at the latest.” --@elonmusk
